Notes from ND
Every band has a few killer cover tunes up their sleeve - whether these are songs
they've learned to get a crowd back on their side, or a song older than they are,
which challenged them to make it their own. Cover songs are also a great way to
introduce an audience to the band's influences. But what about when the audience
is too young to recognize the generations-old influence? What if they can't even
tell it's a cover song? Share your ideas about surprising cover tunes in this new

Interview with the Melodic about 'On My Way'
by Chris Mateer
Anti- a label known for handling such legendary and groundbreaking artists such
as Tom Waits, Neko Case, Calexico, and Mavis Staples, have recently been adding
an impressive roster of young artists blazing new and exciting territory far beyond
the folk and Americana realms. The Melodic is just one of the many exciting acts
to have recently joined the label, along with recent signees The Milk Carton Kids
and Saintseneca. When I first listened to The Melodic's new self-titled On My Way
EP, I was instantly reminded of the likes of Belle and Sebastian and The Decemberists.

Spellbinding Lucinda Williams gig at
Liverpool Philarhmonic
by Julia Coulton
You never quite know what to expect from a Lucinda Williams gig - but on this tour
she is definitely 'Happy Lucinda', seemingly content in her own skin at the unbelievable
age of 60, and thoroughly enjoying herself. And this was gloriously reflected in
her performance, along with Doug Pettigrew on guitar, and David Sutton on bass,
the Liverpool Philharmonic... Della Mae - This World Oft Can Be
by Ed Karn
Ok, so the other night I wrote that for me the most important aspect of the music
I listen to, is the quality of the musicianship of the artists. I like music where
the vocals almost take a backseat to the music. When I listen to music, I want to
hear the individual instruments, not just a blending of all the instruments together.
I live for the solos... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001Yox6_U17-Cu1muSjVOP12JD9f_ZikDuymKFWYwxiNbJUqKqp6rX87rQcgtMWdXI0eLia7RMzouqbsC3UWRZA_eXGhmUDSTotVw4qTeDcCq-YL793TB0ys1ADQVtWPDom-OQ1qWQIOyNPVcRGj0g-oHVp9Voxmbt-aii53QbajXSbXLlBzkeP-DY4ZZAT5h2q]

"The Water Is Wide", Joan Baez, changing lyrics, and other folk music things...and
marriage equality
by Kim Ruehl
It's an old song that dates back anywhere from a century to a half-millennium, depending
on your source. My best guess would be that it's even older than that, or at least
the melody is. Such beautiful, memorable melodies generally are so old, they reside
somewhere within us, like the instinct to make friends or have faith in something.
The words have changed... Delbert & Glen - Blind, Crippled, and Crazy
by Hyperbolium
Delbert McClinton and Glen Clark are long time musical compadres who also happen
to be Texas roots music legends. The duo recorded a pair of albums as Delbert &
Glen in the early '70s, but as their individual careers took off (McClinton as
a recording artist and performer, Clark primarily as a songwriter), additional collaborations

Mavis Staples - Soul folk in action
by David Cantwell
At Memphis' Orpheum Theater in July, Mavis Staples found herself surrounded by nearly
200 dancing children. Though several dozen of these kids were for some reason twirling
umbrellas, Staples wasn't performing "Singing In The Rain". Rather, she was singing
"Will The Circle Be Unbroken", a song she has known nearly her entire life and has
recorded five times throughout a career that spans half a century. Mavis had been
invited to Memphis to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Stax Music Academy,
an urban, youth-based community program associated with the Stax Museum of American
Soul Music...More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001Yox6_U17-Cs3rdVeufX_-QU65ryzvi1szibAdwQyVyEndm7yQFqqAxjZBjzEVoTl3NQGEtlQeJS_aX01P_iBnf1E_o14bygKl1iJQA4dVv36hMpudV9i-sjrZ3hOwdGCp3fxnGcSoHWE3tSlMXcgMxtnm6w-Zp1mdDI5L8VhZAXOR3lm0lDOXA==]

The old paths:
"Help me to sing"
by Josh Compton
It was probably two years ago that I attended my first Sacred Harp singing. The
closest one I could find was in Columbus, Ohio, a two-hour drive. The winter sun
was beginning to set as I pulled into the empty parking lot of the borrowed Episcopalian
church (which has no denominational connections to the group, or to the style itself).
Soon, somebody else arrived. It was Eric, the group's leader... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001Yox6_U17-Ct_9-R3_4tRJH06OazEMHPDbonlw9XI1WhVIpuA1MTiwjnuSfHKOU8GaXO5u5rGC-gw9Mkstqj8NtbbGebH0pmcyht437QvBZwPFZ8g-PzcQSATKC14FCBDe73-Eoac_xO1KGeG8NVOusixbNmmu_Jw4du295YS8-AhZYYHE-4AuZD6kx-igOwi]

Attention-grabbing contemporary blues acts -- bands that really encourage listeners
to pull classic albums out of rotation -- can be hard to find. Fair or not, it usually
