Notes from ND

No Depression has been in the business of music storytelling and criticism for 18
years now, and in that time, the business has changed dramatically. Nonetheless,
even as folks become accustomed to peer reviews and other avenues for music recommendations,
readers still seek out great storytelling and criticism. Who's your favorite critic
or music reporter? Where do you go to learn more about great new music or think
deeply about the stories behind the songs? If ND is your favorite, that's great,
but this new forum [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0018MDitybaaPH5NrRzWGA_WJb-JOoTfeVtHb83BkhgzIIgh8Dg7zaDZt1suR1Z3ETYbn7t9D3kOcgdQRCXj8ov98uCtFef0sJinVz0uO5YJS6M_aJJwwqyruyZlkW6ypW9OfrfHnz9NqMYJynWHppT47j3atFr1VkS2OTT7yn7V0E=]

Remembering T Model Ford - A tribute

by Ryan Mifflin

I was heartbroken today to hear the news of T-Model Ford's passing. T-Model was
a frequent guest on my Dirty Roots Radio Show and I'm very honored and proud to
have been able to get to know him over the last few years. When I tell people about
T-Model Ford I always simply say, "You don't know anyone like T-Model Ford." They
simply don't exist. People often said he was the last of his kind. I say he was
one of a kind. T-Model started life as James Lewis Carter Ford, born into extreme
poverty and violent surroundings. When he was a little boy, his father beat him
so badly that on one... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0018MDitybaaPEWOaoLVEFIvb6Arwk4iv2-30-naRQ2wNfyE95wRupD_VZ524mXqavwiYKywHqwCwCgnjMZsMWReJPcbk_Lbduc81cjtVBmVjoGMrhJzdWhh8gh0nLleB-QQh5cVOE7K4gPRusIRInEjWVdG_XVqNh2EjZT66YGhKSsjgElCJ7-vN_UixPveeqhkUZs2c4kSOI=]

The Tedeschi Trucks Band - Timeless as the red rocks of Colorado

by Kevernacular

The scenery on my drive to Colorado diminished as I headed west: the farmland of
Northern Illinois and Iowa are verdant but without the rolling sumptuousness of
"God's country" in Southwest Wisconsin, which I forsook for a quicker route. Nebraska
unfolds as increasingly flat. I didn't find it boring though, as it put me into
an expansive, Zen-like... An interview with Hayes Carll

by Julie Wenger Watson

Always entertaining and often irreverent, Texas singer songwriter Hayes Carll writes
songs that will make you laugh out loud and a few that might make you cry. With
a wry, observant wit and a clever turn of phrase, the 37 year-old Houston native
is a gifted storyteller with more than a streak of romanticism and a rockin' band.
Carll and his Gulf Coast... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0018MDitybaaPGX7FJMJ5H-kU7tesiJfsQU6cUBz_qEAYQJ46SWpJ5ZvFjKcT5k2PdzKSielfupJnFgDc2k1akS0oICFj45y-PmuadnJAKpc7e_wfkYuZXaEBJqtYNl_0UJ3ZdGMKF0MgF_CnJ5Pnpo81xinvxU5BdvmvRNnhvbiYkszUM64iLqNjz6LMiaLt8Q]

Enjoy The Ride With Drive-By Truckers, Jim Lauderdale, Rodrigo y Gabriela and others

by Michael Bialas

In the spirit of the Ride Festival several scheduled performers were asked to answer
one question: What was the ride of your life? They weren't given any restrictions
or boundaries, just encouragement to relive any thrilling moment that might have
involved planes, trains and automobiles, or an experience less literal. Nearly
everyone who was asked, either through emails or phone interviews, responded, and
some, like the prolific Patterson Hood of the Drive-By Truckers, went the extra
mile. So take a trip.... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0018MDitybaaPFgGB0yW7L8WwIVIyZx4eUCYNeI7JSgBay4fswl7XS4UtL9hTv9HDV1xCiI5nI6itIa3kDQuvKgLug3iqioBTUWBjK_rlPNLJIa7pU6RdBdzQ6SeWY0V_vCZDDt1a0b7XoZR9JKebUCMyl-9YGFgqoRcXFmCTQ76kS_1c1g1yXPn0cOBbEYOVSEqj0m4ilLk3HJPkDR7a-znCD8d_fF-K0Zc-pBmGmtdPU=]

Greg Brown - Slant of enchantment

by Roy Kasten

Leaving St. Louis in late September, Highway 61 takes one north, Missouri into Iowa,
along the Mississippi, twin lanes unraveling past cornfields dying or not quite
ready to die, silos overrun with reddening vines, beanfields, the river appearing
aquamarine for seconds, disappearing, the bluffs, land putting the lie to Midwestern
flatness, sinking and rising, carved by streams, horizons broken by houses, power
lines. "It's a war zone out there." September in Iowa City, wind blowing hard from
the west and knocking... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0018MDitybaaPHn_UQOx9D5MSF-2o9wEwYWiohedon24aEhHfFSfV6ja0r5Qkq230WUPMJekKipHlbUSzlCqYSsrunxZD_G7DrPxnGi_hKq-Ei0CY1ppeJuTbc9SsOZBICB7e2QiO1f8MkI3bKb9JLZS-pNKU2VGhlM9yTBZxIpDTIRI3SRbFb9qA==]

Concert review

Old 97s

live in California

by Nate Hertweck

Stitching together a nearly 20-year career as a rock band is not easy, but for Dallas
alt-country road kings the Old 97's, it sure has been fun. On July 7 the foursome
transformed Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach, Calif., into a rowdy Texas roadhouse,
blistering through highlights from their vast catalog in what felt like a single
burst of high-octane country rock energy. The Old 97's are an endearing crew, led
by their relentlessly likable frontman Rhett Miller, whose vocal...
