From Kim Ruehl, your Guide to Folk Music
With US Independence Day coming up this week, now seems like a great time to look at all the patriotic American folk songs we know - from Woody Guthrie's anthemic "This Land Is Your Land" to "America the Beautiful" and even the National Anthem. Learn where all these songs came from, then have a great 4th of July!

Folk Song History of "America the Beautiful"
When it comes to songs which celebrate all the good things about the American nation - from the landscape to the people and beyond - few songs say it better than "America the Beautiful." Learn more about where this song came from with this brief history.

All About "This Land Is Your Land"
See above where I said few songs say it better... this would be one of those few. Woody Guthrie's great tribute to his home country was written in response to the popularity of "God Bless America." Learn more about this great folk song's history...

What Is "Yankee Doodle" About?
I always thought "Yankee Doodle" was a fun little song about a hard-core patriot on a pony. But, apparently it was a phrase used to make fun of the American soldiers during the revolution. Of course, the Americans flipped it around and made it a source of pride. Learn more with this history.

Learn More about the "Star Spangled Banner"
The US National Anthem is a song about great triumph and pride, glory in battle, et cetera, and it's based on an old English drinking song. A fitting combination for contemporary Independence Day activities. Learn more about the National Anthem here.
