Artists to Watch at Newport Folk Fest 2013
You've got to love any folk music festival that features Trombone Shorty, Iris DeMent, the Avett Brothers, and Ramblin' Jack Elliott all in one weekend. But, aside from the well-known artists, there are a slew of newer-comers raring to grace the stage this year. Here's a look at a handful you won't want to miss.

From its beginning in 1959, the Newport Folk Festival has been one of the most storied American folk music festivals on the circuit. Its stage has hosted everyone from Muddy Waters to Bob Dylan, Mavis Staples, Ani DiFranco, and beyond. If you're heading out this year, learn a little more about the history of the festival.

One of the artists I'm most excited to see at Newport 2013 is Iris DeMent, whose 2012 release 'Sing the Delta' was one of the best albums of last year. Whether or not you're heading to Newport, though, now's as good a time as any to learn more about Iris DeMent's incredible career.

In the summer of 1965, folk revival darling Bob Dylan showed up at Newport with an electric rock band. It wasn't the first (or last) time anyone had brought a rock band to Newport, but it was certainly the most famous time.
