Notes from ND

We've said in this space a number of times before that there's nothing quite like
hearing great music live - whether in a small bar or on a large festival stage.
But, the truth is, so many venues either have terrible sound systems or the sound
is run by folks who don't seem to know what to do with acoustic instruments. Large
rooms and outdoor venues are difficult to manage when it comes to the sound board
but, as this new forum states, we put a man on the moon almost a half-century ago;
why can't we get great sound in larger venues? Have you found any large venues with
great sound? Chime in [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001oS2pRcNPOk9_pn6wLnode4Tpx2NIa1QoXC3MJ21Jvv0EZ007woFy5QCfyS1bbtNc4_QecFitBCLpwFC_xkM0N7A4CKxXL9lhhViGlJE3ZbWvtbcNwc9SbYW0EZgFkfgJE7wuE09Xqp_2zkPXaytibi-kP8k0Za8liqzolVLzkcxYEDnr8GkRDtDNIAebMmMvzaQgxxM0IPc=]

Mavis Staples - 'One True Vine'

by big boy

For the second installment of Mavis Staples' Tweedyville sessions on Anti records,
the 74 year old gospel funkatrix sounds a bit more subdued than she did on the initial
2010 Jeff Tweedy-produced outing, You Are Not Alone. On that first one, Mavis sounded
more like way the she did with daddy Pops in the Staples Singers' heyday, Tweedy
emulating Pops' tremelo-soaked guitar on several cuts, capturing his essence perfectly
on "Don't Knock." Mavis was ebullient and upbeat throughout that release, celebrating
her funky gospel... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001oS2pRcNPOk8aT9L8abkW6vBfr3KzvurkNgI1GkWkZAA--q4V-QIyfdVcleHhmvy8YMKORUIadSn8UFsM1Zf8t7r1mtOzxekaZWbMh3eJI90hOVL5t8WlgrvvlF4q9BQWK3vailVYiabwFh2NeJyAmk-iZum3XtTz58lnrzuWtFTCQMNpItcbFaeFlIeB_-Jkji3uwwK_AJM=]

Review of Guy Clark - 'My Favorite Picture of You'

by Corky J. Carrel

For all the times in my life I've wished I were younger, I have to admit there are
plenty of times that I'm grateful for my age. I've gotten to see a lot of history
in real time and got to school some younger people about the "way it really was"
and so on, (whether they were listening or not). One of those grateful aspects
has been to buy each and every Guy Clark... David Byrne & St. Vincent close out the Ride Festival

by Michael Bialas

She was barely 5-feet tall, but still determined to reach David Byrne one way or
another. The 20-something woman found her spot front-and-center below the 7-foot-high
Fred Shellman Memorial Stage, named in honor of the late founder of the Telluride
Bluegrass Festival. She positioned herself for maybe that once-in-a-lifetime chance
to interact with... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001oS2pRcNPOk84LVNNLlD0VU8r520w6BtXr9kOB6euK-u2NRDXm8lvM4Q9dtkYVNmrIF3PBRol5vgudm6IAJlIN3igGGh-PHM74iGXxQCIfCijftI4DND8F1Y5bN83_szuJqZmEky258kr_zfT_D3Aosd9y_dWW8SKMxV69cRhYmCSbR8rBKl_YuU3N5yKBudwCi_nSGQ_Y_MRqx2puuNAMXwFTANwereVvdbfaPysaAQ=]

Vancouver Folk Festival Day 2: Steve Earle caps a great day of music

by Skot Nelson

After a great opening night, day two of the 2013 Vancouver Folk Festival marked
the first full day of the festival and the start of the well known workshops. These
workshops make up the daytime portion of the program and with 8 stages going, it's
a lot of programming to catch. When gates opened at 10 a Songwriter's Cafe quickly
got underway... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001oS2pRcNPOk_pQZweNHGh2Do2U2rrhaLMNGXZp9poGTsQRMVU--3Yd3kzDh9fSiciVrocfcduPksQFnd1KfWApA6dQwvmlVOUf50U4VgdxPL4xX4UNZeeRgTf2cjEHI2XiBiLZVNoh0-sY3bIIdOpYNG8jR0Av5V05alRw95rdaEufE86Nkqe23f9zBrRsHs-qK0NlI04EfHpI1eDrJzepDkwIuPDjY0nEMZXQPfx3Fc=]

People Want To Tell Their Stories * A conversation with Peter Guralnick

By Bill Friskics-Warren

It happens all the time. You read an article in a music magazine, scratch your head
and go, "Wait a minute, what does this have to do with the singer or record I thought
I was reading about? This says more about the person who wrote the piece than anything
else." To be sure, all writing reveals something about the author as well as the
subject. Yet it seems that the focus of more and more music stories isn't the record
or the people who made it, but the critic - clever quips, turns of phrase... More

Further, more or less - Returning to the scene of the Dead 30 years later

I went back with some misgivings - no Jerry Garcia will do that to even the most
