From Kim Ruehl, your Guide to Folk Music
In light of the passing of Toshi Seeger (more on that below) and all current events, this week seemed like a great time to revisit the utility of topical folk music. From civil rights songs to labor movement music, anti-war tunes, and the incredible influence of Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, and Phil Ochs, this week's newsletter is packed with topical folk music essentials.

Toshi Ohta Seeger Has Died at Age 91
Toshi-Aline Ohta Seeger was not herself a musician (she was a filmmaker, among many other things), but she was the artistic programmer for the Clearwater Folk Festival and an incredibly active participant - and motivational force - behind her husband Pete's remarkable folk music career. Learn more about her life and passing.

Review: 'Woody at 100! Live at the Kennedy Center'
Anyone unclear about the incredible influence Woody Guthrie has had not only on contemporary singer-songwriters, but also the realm of topical music, would be well-advised to cozy up to this great live-in-concert tribute album featuring Ani DiFranco, Tom Morello, Old Crow Medicine Show, and more. Check out my full review.

Essential Phil Ochs Songs
Phil Ochs is widely known as one of the finest topical songwriters to ever touch the craft. He spared nobody and no group with his biting satire and socio-political commentary, from "Love Me I'm a Liberal" to "The Power and the Glory" and beyond. Check out these essential folk protest songs.

Civil Rights Songs
American folk music has a long, productive relationship with the civil rights movement, from songs sung to integrate unions to those used in the March on Washington, to those which are sung by civil rights groups today. Check out these civil rights essentials.
