In the 19th Century, Francis James Child collected around 300 songs from the English and Scottish traditions and compiled them into a book now known, simply, as the Child ballads. These tunes have been resurrected and recorded for generations and, with a new collection of them released last month, now seems like as good a time as any to take a look at the Child ballads.
