Notes from ND
With spring, if you're lucky, comes warmer weather and longer days, more time spent
outside, the possibility of road trips and summer plans. As all these things kick
into gear, the music changes too. What have you been listening to these past couple
weeks as the seasons change? Have the CDs in your stereo gone from dark wintry vibes
to more energetic spring sounds? Or is the snow falling where you are, and Leonard
Cohen is playing on a loop? Pop into the forum and share what you're listening to

Son House - Preachin' the blues
by Gary Burnett
The blues has had an uneasy tension with the church. For many God-fearing people
in the deep South, blues music was difficult to reconcile with a church-going lifestyle,
because of its association with the juke joint and hard liquor drinking, the association
that some bluesmen claimed with the devil and the whole idea of "mojo." Michael
Bane, in his book about Elvis, White Boy Singin' the Blues, says, "The blues especially
were the opposite side of sacred ... You could sing gospel or the blues, but never
both. The blues belonged to the Devil, with his high-rollin' ways... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001lCxlFn7gL3iW70xg0UKLWZSC2U6FTSFoi9q1mGjv4uxqe_-JtL10utiYAOF9kwSZP5nx4Q6RkI4BPmcgf7Iu_bsSkXw0UOMfoGFEDTE8Nb1bE07ZA-aMEVvWjbwIGDBl6d1QNV-RWLtV7-D_nJ3baXo4cP7ok5jeLmQnUpsvs39v39QZWOT_4A==]

Shovels + Rope live at the Biltmore Cabaret
by Skot Nelson
I'm loathe to miss a good show, but sometimes fortune doesn't shine kindly. The
phenomenon known as Shovels + Rope last played Vancouver on August 2nd of 2012,
the same night as the phenomenon called Wagons was playing at the Railway Club.
We make our choices and I chose the Wagons--a good choice too, since the show I
did go to was pretty killer... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001lCxlFn7gL3jxzgCUBqoTCwf4Scj0n9zdtSzg7uvqwyVLWi7BitoErMivkl8GQ80sj2ElyFuWnfwChjm_NVDvDPBBct0Dlq5_OboecTxt4wKUp8rZp3_RgxCPARmt8arJBbnw2LkIrmzjTHRnkgDCcZKuyo1M6JCXz4DksPtVVCSKnj9WggXoMYw0YZGnQjt9myG0R9UVf-Fn_t9woaufVg==]

CD Review of Peter Stampfel & the Ether Frolic Mob -
'The Sound of America'
by Paul K
Peter Stampfel at 72 might be the grand old man of American string band music but
anyone who has seen him play recently will attest to the fact that he is one of
the "zingiest" characters you could ever hope to meet. He wears his years well and
his infectious bonhomie and general zest for life and for music puts many younger
musicians to shame. He is a bona... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001lCxlFn7gL3gIrEWzJdDAgEbcCKbt7ugm3MjTKtF_YPJH-d2fMXR0nrUz6mpSohciHqAJj1cKQvinhBKnFM6mkVd-g5gCqsrCtu75n8TPfkAdthW_j50o0HeDbDki9ZDNb2bVF8fa0aj6AV52BIDOIU7uW9lu_1xn3kjpM0WMMhCQtgWQMY-87mHnkRhkvfUIqOqYyqRjitdQ_Rc-zNu5Zapa5WXzUyGr]

Mark Erelli - Country & Western Massachusetts
by Russell Hall
Mark Erelli is hardly the laid-back sort. In conversation, one of the first things
you notice about him is a boyish excitement about projects at hand and projects
to come. If you really want to ratchet his enthusiasm up a notch, however, just
ask about the roots music scene in New England. "I'm convinced there is no better
Americana music being made anywhere else in the country," says Erelli, who lives
in Northampton, Massachusetts, 100 miles west of Boston... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001lCxlFn7gL3gZLP5N32Ib_EHMb4iJ-qYDcDRS3NXbXUxR5cRGnOWrRIXQV1Lh6k8_QYz1TMbsgDiJo9bJebMR4dYVhXlVuJSvbc17XWMwWG49lHUh2meM7A2DVdaXK7CBhIkj9-3s-esZU-4nhp0YAzK3L0XNyFHpHYOwRhheE5S5VSx-renv_xdBi9gmftu-]

When well-meaning topical music goes terribly wrong
by Kim Ruehl
Back in 1998, the great folksinger Dan Bern (where has he been lately?) recorded
an album called Fifty Eggs. On it, was a song called "Different Worlds" which addressed
the precarious topic of racial relations in a rather humble and empathic way. Bern,
in his sort of wryly humorous approach, made a long and awkward list of all the
ways white people and African-American... The Flatlanders
head for the hills
by Kevernacular
The Flatlanders seem to embody the restless and intricate cultural development called
roots music. When they performed last night at Potowatomie Casino in Milwaukee,
you could immediately sense the communal and, in this case fraternal, motivation
at work. They're surely brothers in Lone Star spirit, if not blood, having all
been... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001lCxlFn7gL3hDZJ2Q2LbmqYPoT7Us7YVF7z2hislyZLasBJGx-XGJDw96TRPb2qb4fXHKzjM4fbvpqGbQBY58zHJEM9oCkLP8p9yALMmlMh4PZ4FgXSymNrgeFi3bxJNKe9dkMT3fk5N4dQbYVD9CAgKT923fQvNtCeULqxUG8iyekngqvMQuveNfztu2N-z7nLNGA6Fq_G8UuzUsJ4xzQs7VVGWsisYd]
