Notes from ND

Rock n' roll and the blues, especially, have long histories of creative innuendo.
From Bob Seger's "Night Moves" to more confusingly loquacious songs like "Louie
Louie", American music has always found clever ways to talk about everything from
drugs to sex and even murder, without explicitly spelling it out for the listener.
What's your favorite dark-and-dirty song that relies heavily on innuendo? Share
tunes and lyrics in the forum [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001b4AEZIucFNUWarz0a-u5nU4tOUnbqINGTom__X3yTVt0-MpJPFUNgmHs5alpZ5UropYpAUxXwGIQ0_3SofHe9qctqUbDm5w68NJ1GCxb6gNCwrBokctukc77N5GVU6umm0GhxoEr6fBw6_5pwRww8L7MP7g8Gdul],

Review of Andrew Duhon - 'The Moorings'

by Hearth Music

Let me first say that I hate folk-pop music. God, how I hate it. I hate it because
invariably the folk is the smallest consideration in the equation. It's usually
just standard pop music with one acoustic guitar in the mix. Or now, with a banjo.
Hell, I don't even really like "folk" music that much. Too often "folk" means Martin
guitar-slinging singer-songwriter with overly simplified emo songs. What I like
is music that feels like it's made with other people in mind. Not one person looking
to get out some unresolved emotions, but one person who wants to make songs that
can touch other people... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001b4AEZIucFNXRe3_v57NzJFgeSm8-jdCYSi0NaYDR6vpKYz3lEKUefIsaXP_YymeoqcD3fSLyIEVxJ_kyTUbXc95mLkbf4KZazRyjRbE6Lvwva5SRKtDXBrfOYW8VGS1LKHyKcTh31kLqXsGeZxFhdF3D_EJJZOc3XKweMBpF3nMCrmNN7emEL4Ftt5COpIha9e4TSygitcM=]

Belle Starr live at the Railway Club

by Skot Nelson

The legend of Belle Starr's been inspiring creativity for a century now: there's
been dime store novels by too many authors to name, movies and songs from artists
like Bob Dylan and Mark Knopfler that have riffed on the Texas outlaw's tale. New
to that legacy is a collective of some of Canada's brightest musical talents: Kendel
Carson, Miranda Mulholland and... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001b4AEZIucFNUZtedGuIqwfHHwkEdEk6OsMYJv5dl7SdQae0jsN-JMMEEoP6iHErXjqdyRmMUa0Qm__l5hVp6WXuCuAmxtNbA0H46MRUFXjL4wSOYAidRx7zk_tcZ3sbwxgeHLBrISssOq1vk9gaicc-1FiGAnQeyihOxNKuH-faHWUqUHrfkl2W5bwv2bo3RghiTZvbPQIptu0XekFGOcTg==]

Interview with Johnny Winter

by Alan Harrison

Johnny Winter is about to do a short tour of the UK and I managed to get a short
interview for a regional newspaper The Sunday Sun. The word 'legend' is vastly
overused in music circles these days, but it is a fitting adjective to describe
Blues guitarist and singer Johnny Winter who has recently released his 18th studio
album; called Roots. One of the stars of the... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001b4AEZIucFNXbBiX4WIa70Q1iDV_L-gdb7k17aCEAlDK88QyeHE5Dt1MwfiB4aUUS42jwx-XF49b3sQxB0IYXcVuKg3BYqgWcRUZ5y7kkYI7UOE4BsxcpG5Xuap4NdXtloNaHEW_ONORwYklbayPPfGIqOn9fmIZIaDydHZyr9vhAFumuyXYFLA==]

Review of the Driftwood Singers - Self-titled

by Hyperbolium

Twenty-somethings Pearl Charles and Kris Hutson may have grown up in the sunshine
of Los Angeles, but their music is rooted in the hollers of Appalachia and the rolling
hills of Southern Kentucky. Their harmonies span both high-and-lonesome and Everly's-styled
parallel thirds, and their folk and country is made from autoharp, banjo, mandolin,
fiddle, piano and steel... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001b4AEZIucFNXxvYYqHWhSKzRss9fLi0hj8ZxSX9KS915jzg3xLUrmWU5vCWnBl3bbFiZKMXb0KlxEx9XKi_OINmY6UTmgesAoQnQZ4s_9KZqUtyebQLIylBAFHrfIhYivj84wW2vbx_Tupgsba3PU8DouIceAk8J_G3_uFNdHp5xv9BO8Y0dT6xnoeugRDmVnssRVvH_l-s7t3Vy1WjaXB4rxy8keneWz]

John Fogerty - Double Fantasy

by Don McLeese

Has anybody this side of Keith Richards written more indelible riffs than John Fogerty?
Think of all those songs that started with a lick. Think "Green River", "Proud Mary",
"Born On The Bayou", "Up Around The Bend", "Down On The Corner", "Centerfield".
And a dozen or so more. It's almost impossible to think of any Fogerty classic without
remembering its opening riff. The way John Fogerty explains his songwriting process,
he considers himself to be mainly a musician who plays guitar. He has many different
models to choose from, and sometimes... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001b4AEZIucFNUM9l1hFOn4cf-JZoOIRv9zs9xjpfFIM9nMOrAlYzKEpNii_5aStdemSGLHO57g5tKbzN_kCCVcJ8zhTnf8iYUEZT91jqdeCR4ZYWGfdL0yfSKNv4aKDeNsZ27kLqKOXoloqvf2DaB0BUJa2Hd6aJdM7ghKZMmhMW0=]
