Notes from ND
Live albums are an interesting concept. Some bands - especially in the roots/Americana/folk
world - do the best they can to capture the essence of a live show when they go
into the studio. Other bands, however, carefully craft a studio album only to head
out on the road with a show which challenges the boundaries of the songs they recorded.
Bob Dylan, for example, famously re-arranges his songs frequently on the road. When
artists do that, it becomes interesting to hear a live album - to catch all the
hits and misses, the mess-ups, the unexpected moments of glory. What's been your
favorite live album of all time? Share your thoughts in the forum [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001ad1cpnjbrrH38I55HxeLZrfI_W0jfPLuHeiy2Nu3LcYbOToWz6xkVLhDfJjY2yPFk0ypBVKVWK1jKMhwOBwyXzINWKUVAajFZArAx5IPYpPz6aRHu8IxQis9hvsO-4QjtgiYxAHSu2dyKcvNxYBx_3dF6FvqY--xUAFIGkLe4HYAtMvdZSOqeANZwRFS1pk4],

Robert Randolph Presents: The Slide Brothers
by big boy
Even though Robert Randolph's name is writ large on this Concord Records debut studio
album for the Slide Brothers: Aubrey Ghent, Darick Campbell, Chuck Campbell and
Calvin Cooke, Randolph is technically not a member. That privilege is reserved for
some members of the sacred steel community who've been toiling in and out of the
church for decades and haven't as yet had the national spotlight shown on them
as brightly as it has lit up Randolph. He's the producer guesting on 3 of the 11
cuts. The Sacred Steel tradition started in the House Of God church in the' 30s...

Luke Winslow-King - 'The Coming Tide'
by fiddlefreak
Recently I was in Saint Louis and stumbled upon a lively blues trio making music
at a corner hangout called the Blues City Deli, in the Soulard District. We showed
up for lunch at noonish on a Friday, and found a line out the door into the street.
Hello?! Red beans and rice for $3.50, and traditional southern blues for free? A
match made in heaven... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001ad1cpnjbrrGHfFlYsbhEfNHtP06Im2oZvGbGgAbka8QlbGic2WF09Hmxa7BTUlW964IwCBIas5ZZR8a9gxW77sSV1rnbKkaA3ER4LS5NxiBi6Ki2SNFvTR5Tm-li97BrIU-cuRns3UONorsTbED_jVUrqwTtglHUFdS_CVC2L3pIOxlIRfekDvVZQMOYWGXZ]

Review of Big Star - 'Nothing Can Hurt Me'
by Hyperbolium
The slow catching flame of Big Star's belated renown has recently been stoked a
feature-length documentary, and now this Record Store Day double-LP of period demos
and alternate mixes, and a few remixes made for the film. Depending on your viewpoint,
the new mixes may be revelatory and revisionist, or both. The period material, however,
will be welcomed... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001ad1cpnjbrrGwj5U1WiPEfcnkxWOnN3gIgmUfl2WdkQTB7buhFeQIS4Wr1NckbWgLvZ7FiR_HsrdfmDBO3w8t_PpzFnLTc9ZrVDtb4yMCyuj0-rnSWng-WjFc_7gTXmwl0uzV3aOwje6lRNa5Cky1szrKyQOyXY-ZlzhgJhzHkp6VRyAVfXLJBsaopSbjxVDTMlPcdGn0Ktt2epnxB1-1bw==]

BB King: King of the blues
by Dan King
Due to an enrollment overload of adolescent baby boomers, I spent the first two
years of my high school experience on double sessions. Interestingly, among that
large sea of blemished teenage faces and new social experience that exsisted on
campus, the number of Black students to be found could have been counted on one
hand. Blacks were not barred... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001ad1cpnjbrrEuUORAitO5i48OswUU3Om4B1ERAX1I9H5gilVYhDsx7R2thkcblEmHfkVTVqMX4ggIP4mCGn7VIRoxi1PWwFfeVOvjxmL0Zk3UZE-Yfw3DkNjq2KQ7_JdEauIGblr3ignQcxrnDsLn9pcIltJhV0FmFjeZdJRpRw_OdKdTJKp37Q==]

Belle Starr - A lighter shade of twang
by Dan Bentele
If Belle Starr's sound were analogous to their horse-thieving, gun-toting, outlaw-loving
namesake, you'd might expect one of those Marshall-stacked, power-chord-wielding
acts that occupy the darker edges of alternative country. But, to the benefit of
better hearing and twangy hooks, that's not the case. Belle Starr's new release,
Nobody You'd Know, walks a free-flowing yet playful gait through 12 original songs
and one cover, rocking a bit harder than their first (1996's Far As The Wind Blows).
The record gathers sustenance from country-pop...More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001ad1cpnjbrrEhxUhebHMa0h-0-UIaCrnXIBc-muO7XkHRJUtpYvilk3tjvosHz4OwoTVCDDv_hS8-t8xDhsC-Zus8PjDr6by3FpSbaOwJODvF70AdYWqLBiIwxvvFwsjR1UI48KdjozCbfd3zxj3rB9itAaZEwz6NoXQvOT5wRVALufUxqGflEw==]
