Notes from ND

There is no arguing the influence of the Band on the evolution of American roots
and Americana music, not to mention the trajectory of rock and roll over the past
several decades. So, it is with great excitement that we've teamed up with the fine
folks at Universal Music to organize a contest to give away two copies of the new
monster box set: The Band Live at the Academy of Music 1971. Enter to win [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001XdRF9r3Z6pExVdBZFKPRALKsKDEUZhxbDAPJhPNXZSCTp-rZQeEy_EVaSrWat1DxK-4FtUDJ_CEGJgcB_Uiei-pUyIkcgHNb-egaY4SZ0xjEES2MqyqchKJmjPx5PbPYiqfa9yFEMOOuSWq85VYcFLBFl5Y3K235pEtkcA0W-BEVcmEq9udthT_hqyiustJsBv7EdWTXXefLaDoiHeKpQfRNcLp5ue9K].

Meanwhile, If you're heading to the AMA conference in Nashville this week, join
us at the Sheraton on Friday for an ND Community meetup [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001XdRF9r3Z6pE7SrIiQ_Ni2EbmFEPWmbF3HQnrOb-T79zjnN6K0LlZGwYWpXbQO_NTkWY1tfp4dW6_Vhp8KoP1jfg25sD46s_y_8jB_8E-spcngd_HopzNz3y49FjTNTvpyTC7N8F5yrMraPwWNmt6Wtay446yijEjnuYgt1fCoTaIaeRvj5NHYGwPi4myquQ90lXP8TSUeh4=],

Grace Potter & the Nocturnals - Preserving

rock and roll for the rest of us

by Joanna Colangelo

The beginning of September always reminds me of those distant days of teenaged autumn
evenings. Junior year of high school was just starting, and this was the time of
year when my newly licensed friends and I would be squeezing in the final hours
of late night weekend drives on deserted roads with the car windows down, someone
rebelliously smoking a cigarette in the backseat, and all of us singing along to
a very particular batch of songs that we had discovered during summer vacation.
It was the mid-1990s and we made mixed tapes with great pride -- generally seeing
who could "out-obscure" one another ... Interview with Alice Gerrard

by Kim Ruehl

Alice Gerrard has played with some of folk music's great legends: Hazel Dickens,
Mike Seeger, Elizabeth Cotten. Her career has spanned a half-century and touched
upon the realms of country, bluegrass, and old time, influencing generations of
players and songwriters alike. But, it wasn't until this summer that she ever released
a solo album of all original songs ... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001XdRF9r3Z6pHRx-E10-zhfm2vh6oeOKQKWsbY1RuOGtFIG4guU1YVil8H-H2aoUd9O3HLCcQwqw6jujioPlMZQIrZPtKvlw9jMc9NbKSEl9vNm0CImdOttPdzaDQy5I-P3Q4WoFZzFvYtw9uhcJ10PMvRibePpyX86xujdYJBp6JS5E12HTZIjmufsVomRAXj]

Bluegrass inventor Bill Monroe springs a surprise

by Kevernacular

I interviewed Bill Monroe -- born 102 years ago today -- between his sets at Summerfest
in 1981 for The Milwaukee Journal. He is credited for inventing bluegrass in 1939
when his Bluegrass Boys auditioned at the Grand Old Opry and caused a high, lonesome
stir that has never quite died down, rather coming and going through American culture
like the wandering ... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001XdRF9r3Z6pHOP-2ViQUW7XDQVk701_WyiAMs6F5HAiwJcyi5eAz5NTx44Zf5Urq4BD0fnKl8wsa-M44hTLNBLVbukAKc4Wzxn7WluH1yuW6PpvpoK4XUxM7Q-4iNXuk2jwqAEseeIMw8ASlBZIEWqNp7Viwg3yRtNQE_D_N2hvzt1gx3NYwhJVwdDhJwg5U39sr1cj1YBef1Nm17HUtO2wkKhVRQ-6VzkW08Dt06Xm8=]

Jason Molina & the Spineriders - 'Hell Future Tinglies'

by Amos Perrine

Jason Molina was from Lorain, Ohio. He became well known performing and recording
as Songs: Ohia, as a solo artist and with a revolving cast of musicians. Beginning
in 2003, he recorded either under his own name or with a stable line-up of band
members as the Magnolia Electric Company. Molina first used the Songs: Ohia name
on a mid-'90s ... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001XdRF9r3Z6pFG0zN-1NL4Xp22obmIeep3myd74TJPEvAz4Tj2HkGeh-mD72895CvhFJTGPgeK8vfd5CAdAzVL0ZXXjIdIf_BXXGNS04niTAjPF0SD19PD8HRElV1XG1HeM20KhfA0UnOGwJrmgEy8kuo8VT-c3TkkXgpSOQiiX4prH_4UwBeFoI0lC5h5MKEL3tYZiyW2IZGCX2z7utNSCMu7DQkn8D1M]

Kitty Wells - The angel went down to Georgia

by Bill Friskics-Warren

Kitty Wells, the Queen of Country Music, went to Georgia in 1974 to record with
members of Allman Brothers and the Marshall Tucker Band. It was the first time a
big-name country hitmaker had cut an entire album with a rock band, but hardly
the first time Kitty Wells had done the unexpected. Capricorn Sound Studios in Macon
was the mecca of Southern Rock, the room where, among other things, the Allmans
recorded "Ramblin' Man". And yet there, behind the microphone, stood the impeccably
coifed Miss Kitty, pushing 55 and as matronly as Mrs. Cleaver, laying ... Sam Baker live in Cambridgeshire and London

by Jela Webb

When the dates for Sam Baker's UK tour were published I was disappointed to see
that the furthest south he would be playing was in London. Living near Brighton,
I can get up to London easily enough but like, if possible, to go to more than
just one show during a tour. And so it was that I found myself at the 'Rhythm at
