From Kim Ruehl, your Guide to Folk Music
One of the most common misconceptions about American folk music is that it's all old, dusty, rusty tunes brushed off from previous generations. But, in reality, folk music is always being made, written, reworked, and adapted for each new generation and the community from whence they came. So, in the spirit of newness and honoring innovation, here's a look at some of the best new artists on the scene

The Stray Birds
The past couple of weeks have seen a couple of conferences and festivals in the roots music world: first the Americana conference in Nashville, then the IBMA (bluegrass) gathering in North Carolina. One of the finest acts to hit both was the Stray Birds. Learn more about the Stray Birds with this brief bio.

The Greencards
The Greencards have been making their way around the bluegrass and Americana scenes for about a decade now, but their latest album 'Sweetheart of the Sun' is probably their finest, most fully realized effort yet. If you're not familiar with them yet, now is the time to start.

Holly Williams
Holly Williams may be heir to country music royalty, but her songwriting is decidedly more folky than that of her father and grandpops. Her latest album, 'The Highway', is easily one of the finest singer-songwriter efforts of the year thus far and her live show has the energy to back it up. Learn more about Holly Williams with this introductory bio.

Sarah Jarosz
Sarah Jarosz's much-buzzed-about third album 'Build Me up from Bones' is a terrific, lush, emotional, beautiful effort. Backed by a very small band of collaborators, Jarosz shows off how far she's come from being a mandolin prodigy as a teenager. Learn more about Jarosz with this brief peek.
