Riccardo Chailly to La Scala

RiccardoChailly_10-18-13

Alexander Pereira's statement that he wants an Italian music director for La Scala, when he takes over as intendant there in Oct. 2014, is about to come true. Italy's Corriere delaserra is reporting that Pereira's choice is Riccardo Chailly. He will move into the job in January 2017, succeeding Daniel Barenboim, who has said he will exit before Pereira takes over.

The move will be a homecoming for Chailly; he was born in Milan and, at age 20, apprenticed at La Scala under Claudio Abbado. The famed house was also the site of his conducting debut, in 1978.

Chief conductor and general music director of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchester since 2005--and recently extended there through 2020--Chailly, 60, enjoys star status. In addition to having been chief conductor of major international ensembles, including the Concertgebouw, he is a popular guest conductor in Europe; his Stateside appearances have become increasingly sparse over the years.

Another Top Exec Departs IMG Artists

JerryInzerillo_10-18-13

Libby Abrahams, senior VP and director of artist management in the IMG Artists' London office, has officially resigned. She leaves on the heels of Sara Hunt, senior VP and artist manager for the conductors and instrumentalists division, also in London, until one month ago.

A statement from Abrahams indicates that she is starting her own company after 12 years with IMG Artists: "The time has come to create a new venture within performing arts management," she says.

The company reports that to "ensure the transition," Abrahams' duties will be passed on to New York-based Kristin Lancino, executive director of IMG Artists; London-based Lorna Aizlewood, named managing director and general counsel, Europe, in May; and Kathryn Enticott, senior VP and managing director of artist management for Europe.

In May, IMG CEO Jerry Inzerillo [pictured with his wife, Prudence] cited the "current global restructuring of IMGA." He wasn't kidding.

Gramophone Magazine to Be Sold

Gramophone_10-18-13

Gramophone magazine, a U.K. publication specializing in classical music recordings, is to be sold by Haymarket Media Group to London-based Mark Allen Publishing, a family-owned company whose 50 niche journals include such titles as Primary Teacher Update, Recycling & Wasteworld, Carriage Driver, and the only immediately apparent fit, Jazzwise.

The sale is expected to be completed by the end of October, pending "contract and completion of staff consultation."

Chairman Mark Allen called Gramophone a "formidable brand [that] will add gravitas to our music publishing interests. It is a fitting stable mate to Jazzwise..., which we acquired earlier this year."

Gramophone has been on the market for some time, according to those familiar with the transaction.

Vienna Staatsoper Joins the Live Stream Crowd

  FrankWelserMost_12-14-12

BERLIN -- The Vienna Staatsoper is about to enter desktops and living rooms around the world. Its new digital streaming service, which will kick off with Rosenkavalier  on Oct. 27, comes at the cost of 14 euros per live HD transmission. There is also an on-demand archive-production option, for five euros a view.

"We are of the opinion that our work has a value," Intendant Dominique Meyer told the dpa. "That is why we are not making it free."

The project has taken its cue from the Met HD-broadcasts, but the Staatsoper offers a few more bells and whistles. Two different versions will be available on separate channels: one as if watching "from the third row," the other a made-for-video edit. The viewing experience will be integrated with two separate apps providing, respectively, a multi-media program book and subtitles (in German, English, and Korean); as of December the latter app will also include a score displayed in synch with the music.

"This is a step that places us ahead of all over opera houses," Music Director Franz Welser-Möst told Der Standard.

Opera News in for a Profile Change

PamelaDunway_10-18-13

Opera News magazine has named a marketing guru to the post of "publisher and chief marketing officer." She is Pamela Dunaway, a specialist in brand management who has worked for the likes of Ziff Davis, Condé Nast, and Spin Live!

Judging from her prepared comments, Dunaway will be primarily pursuing new advertising avenues, with a particular focus on high-end luxury goods. It also sounds like the magazine is in for major alterations in its marketplace profile.

"Opera News is poised for enormous growth," says Dunaway. "Our sophisticated, highly affluent readership has the resources and inclination to pursue interests outside the realm of opera, as well."

Who Am I? Is This the Asylum?
AlbertInnaurdo_10-18-13
From Albert Babbling On by Albert Innaurato

Well, Alberto (that's me) does babble on a lot. And that reminded me of a little known Rossini Opera, Ciro in Babilonia. Poor Ciro does have his problems, though talking too much isn't one of them (on the other hand, in my case, ...). It's one of the happy/sad realities of a troubled time for the arts, that we can fairly easily encounter Ciro on DVD and CD; a score has been prepared that is fair to Rossini. And we can find out by reading that score, or experiencing one of the DVDs that Ciro is fascinating, phenomenally orchestrated, and full of great tunes. Ciro's enemy even gets one of the great tenor mad scenes in opera.

That's happy because it's a fine opera. That's sad because it's not new, just unfamiliar. It's a very old opera, in a very old style with a very old story. Art is about us, now. One shouldn't have to be like a soldier fighting battles, to believe that arts that can't renew themselves die.

Agents and Artists: Who Controls the Money?

From Law and Disorder by Brian Taylor Goldstein

Dear Law and Disorder

I am considering working with an agent, but almost every agent I speak with wants to collect my engagement fees on my behalf. Why can't I collect my fees and just pay the agent? If an agent collects my fees, should I ask for a separate bank account? What about statements? Is it reasonable to ask for monthly accountings? When do I get paid? What's standard?
