From Kim Ruehl, your Guide to Folk Music

For the past year or two, I've stood by as everyone moaned and groaned and lumped praise onto UK troupe Mumford & Sons for the way they pull together elements of indie rock and traditional English folk into a soup of mainstream-palatable goodness. Meanwhile, the tradition of folk-rock music has been rolling along for generations now, and a sizable crop of lesser-known folk-rockers are just as awesome (if not, occasionally, moreso) as Marcus Mumford and the crew. So, in the interest of giving you more to love (or roll your eyes at), here's a look at some of the finest in folk-rock music, from the old school to the younger set.

Great New Folk-Rock Bands
If you like Mumford and Sons, the Lumineers, and the rest of the latest crop of mainstream folk-rock stars, chances are you'll really dig this list of lesser-known (but, in some cases, even better) traditionally informed folk-rock acts.

All About Folk-Rock
From Neil Young and the Byrds to the Head and the Heart, folk-rock music has been popping up in the mainstream for decades. Try as pop bloggers might to call it a trend, it's become almost as much of a tradition as the old-school of folk music itself.

Profile: The Band
One of the first and finest folk-rock bands on the scene was called, aptly, The Band. They began as the backup band for Bob Dylan but quickly cemented their place in rock history with their own incredible compositions. Learn more about Levon Helm, Rick Danko, and the rest of the guys who set a bar for bands like Mumford & Sons, many years ago.

All About the Avett Brothers
Another one of the great newer bands that's helped blaze a trail for a new generation of folk-rockers is the fabulous Avett Brothers. They have a new album ready to drop (a follow-up to last year's The Carpenter), which makes now as good a time as any.
