"PBS Americana Music Weekend" to kick off November 22, 2013

Iconic, Award-Winning Talent Lined Up for
"NASHVILLE 2.0: The Rise of Americana" and "ACL Presents: Americana Music Festival 2013"

Americanafest 2014 dates set for September 17-21

Nashville, Tenn. -- October 31, 2013 -- Premieres of two Americana music specials, the performance-filled documentary "NASHVILLE 2.0: The Rise of Americana" and "ACL Presents: Americana Music Festival 2013," will anchor the "PBS Americana Music Weekend," Friday and Saturday, November 22 and 23, 2013.

"NASHVILLE 2.0: The Rise of Americana," premiering Friday, November 22 at 9:00 p.m. ET as part of the PBS Fall Arts Special, explores the Americana musical melting pot, looking to the future while embracing the breadth and genius of roots music artists, as well as Nashville's role as the genre's homebase.  It include performances and interviews with a comprehensive lineup of rising and veteran country, folk, rock and multi-genre artists who are prominent in the Americana movement, among them Alabama Shakes, The Avett Brothers, Billy Bragg, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Rosanne Cash, The Civil Wars, Emmylou Harris, The Mavericks and Dwight Yoakam. A full list follows below.

"ACL Presents: Americana Music Festival," a special episode of Austin City Limits capturing performance highlights from the 2013 Americana Music Association Honors & Awards, premieres Saturday, November 23 on KLRU (Austin PBS) and PBS stations nationwide (check local listings for broadcast dates and times). Viewers in Nashville and Middle Tennessee can see the episode a day earlier, when Nashville Public Television (NPT) airs "ACL Presents: Americana Music Festival" on Friday, November 22 at 9:00 p.m. CT following "Nashville 2.0: The Rise of Americana."

Recorded in September at Nashville's historic Ryman Auditorium, the program -- like "The Rise of Americana" -- showcases both established and rising stars, many performing and participating in musical collaborations. Among those artists featured are Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell, Shovels & Rope, Kelly Willis and Bruce Robison, The Milk Carton Kids, Old Crow Medicine Show, Holly Williams, Dr. John with Dan Auerbach, Duane Eddy, John Fullbright, Stephen Stills with Richie Furay and Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Buddy Miller and Jim Lauderdale.  Full ACL episodes are available online at acltv.com following their initial broadcast.

The not-for-profit Americana Music Association has also set the dates for its primary fundraising event. The 15th Annual Americana Music Festival & Conference will take place September 17-21, 2014 in Nashville, Tenn. The annual Honors & Awards show will once again kick off the event at the historic Ryman Auditorium on Wednesday, September 17, 2014.  Full Festival & Conference registrations will go on sale at early bird rates on Friday, November 15, 2013 via www.americanamusic.org.

"It's astonishing how much vibrant, soul-shaking and exciting music is coming out right now from the Americana movement which both welcomes and blends the best of this country's musical traditions," says Donald Thoms, PBS Vice President of General Audience Programming and Talent Management.  "It's doubly exciting to present 'Nashville 2.0's" fast-paced and comprehensive primer on Americana music, paired with 'Austin City Limits'' annual concert that gives viewers a closer look at these performers and the songs that are constantly redefining the genre."

Artists performing on "Nashville 2.0: The Rise of Americana" in alphabetical order (* indicates an Americana Music Award winner; italics indicates a Grammy Award winner): Alabama Shakes*, The Avett Brothers*, Billy Bragg, Laura Cantrell, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Rosanne Cash*, The Civil Wars*, Elizabeth Cook, Rodney Crowell*, Dawes, Jerry Douglas*, John Fullbright, Shakey Graves, Emmylou Harris*, The James Hunter Six, Jason Isbell* & Amanda Shires, Jim Lauderdale*, The Lone Bellow, The Mavericks, The Milk Carton Kids, Buddy Miller*, Mumford & Sons*, Shovels and Rope*, Richard Thompson* and Dwight Yoakam*.

Americana Music Association

"To advocate for the authentic voice of
American Roots Music around the world."

It's an exciting time in the Americana community.  Our September Music Festival & Conference was our most successful event ever.  More than 150 performing artists, over 200 panelists, 1500+ music business conference attendees with an aggregate 20,000 fans attending Americanafest over the five day event;  All record numbers.

Last week, we hit a new high as we now have over 1900 members marking a 19% increase to our community from last year, and a steady climb since 2007 when the Association included 1100 members.

Our association works to enhance the general awareness of our genre and community taking the form of projects that increase general visibility - all with the ultimate goal of connecting artists to an appreciative audience.

To that end we promote the Americana community via grassroots marketing, social media (Facebook and Twitter) and, best of all, word of mouth. In addition to hosting the annual Americana Music Festival & Conference in Nashville and producing the Honors & Awards show from the historic Ryman Auditorium (as seen on AXS TV and PBS via Austin City Limits), we also publish the weekly Americana Airplay Chart, participate in industry events, conduct research and serve as an advocate on behalf of Americana's interests.

In the coming weeks, we will commence our annual Board of Directors elections. Today, we write to ask for your consideration to renew or become a member so that you can directly contribute to our direction with your vote.

The Americana Board of Directors is an elected group of individuals voted in by our membership.  The Board members are volunteers, meeting monthly throughout the year and setting the Association's agenda and long range plans at an annual retreat in January.

By becoming a member, if you are not one already, you will have voting privileges to allow you to take part in the upcoming election that will commence on November 4.

Additionally, membership will allow you to vote in our annual Honors & Awards election that will take place in the spring.  It will also secure a discounted registration rate for our annual festival and conference slated for September 2014 in Nashville, TN (more details on that to follow).

JOIN TODAY! It's easy and affordable to sign up!  Just visit our store by clicking HERE or give us a call in the office (615) 386-6936.  For more information on the Americana Music Association please visit our website www.americanamusic.org.

Remembering Lou Reed and Elliott Smith, plus the Devil Makes Three, Emmylou Harris, and more

Patty Griffin live at the Ryman, by Amos Perrine

Notes from ND

Over the weekend, we heard of the passing of Lou Reed - one of the great American songwriters. His influence transcended genre and generation, touching musicians and songwriters around the world. It's been difficult to think of any words to share to sum up Reed's incredible gift, so we're going to rest on just reveling in his music itself. Here he is with his wife Laurie Anderson, performing "Hang on to Your Emotions," and here's the sadly apropos "See That My Grave is Kept Clean." Enjoy the music, or keep reading for some highlights from the past week ...

For Elliott, Forever Ago

by Kim Ruehl

To be perfectly honest, I don't know why I started writing this piece about Elliott Smith this week. I was never a big fan, never studied his music very closely. I didn't even like it all that much until I found myself in a relationship with someone who did, who played it all the time. Then his lyrics and lulling, background melodies wandered, painstakingly, subconsciously, into my favor. Apparently. Meanwhile, a lot of people in my profession have been talking about the tenth anniversary of Smith's death this week. This is a little bit puzzling to me. I'd rather mark life and time by focusing on notable birthdays and anniversaries, but anytime any facet of the media... More

The Devil Makes Three - "I'm a Stranger Here"

by James G. Carlson

"I'm A Stranger Here," the fourth studio album by American roots trio The Devil Makes Three, is scheduled for an October 29, 2013 release on New West Records. On this ten-song record The Devil Makes Three give more of the bluegrass, ragtime, country, and rockabilly sound that has earned them a considerable fan base in recent years. Although ... More

Emmylou Harris - "Cowgirl's Prayer" Revisited

by Jim Slattery

This morning, my commute to work in Washington, D.C. was especially brutal with train delays due to track problems and bus delays due to the rain. A local news agency asked followers what they'd be doing to remain calm and patient. I could think of no other way to reply than to simply state "Listen to Emmylou Harris," and listen to Emmylou Harris I did ... More

Peter Cooper - "Opening Day"

by Barry Gilbert

As I write this, Opening Day is just three hours away - well, Opening Day of the 2013 World Series. A good time to listen anew to Peter Cooper's recent CD, "Opening Day." The bases on "Opening Day" (Red Beet Records) are loaded - with the humor, warmth and honesty that have marked Cooper's previous solo albums as well as his contributions to three ... More

Issue #7 Backsliders - Fallen Angels

with Grizzled Faces

by David Menconi

The music scene around Raleigh and Chapel Hill, North Carolina, is about as balkanized as...well, the former Yugoslavia. You've got your punk rock kids, technique fetishists, frat-party bands, heavy metal bands, pop bands. Most all of them keep to themselves in their respective, mutually exclusive corners, which goes for the bands as well as audiences. But if there's a single consensus band that cuts across the scene's different strata, it's the Backsliders, who rule the roost when it comes to Tar Heel country-rock. Locally, they're regarded with something akin to awe. They have the air of grizzled-yet-hip ... More

Box Sets and More Thoughts on the Grateful Dead. Really?

by Easy Ed

A convergence of thoughts came to me, prompted by a headline and picture from the NPR website. Thought #1: The author in this piece basically is questioning the need for yet more box sets by Dylan and Morrison who are the focus here, but not the only ones who issue endless versions and remixes and digitally enhanced and unreleased and lost and found and collector's only packages. It's a cottage industry that has been ... More

From Kim Ruehl, your Guide to Folk Music

...because, why not? Woody Guthrie was one of the finest American folksingers to ever mosey on into the craft. Last week, the folks at Rounder Records and those at the Woody Guthrie Archive released a behemoth box set of all the recordings and projects Woody Guthrie ever did with and for the American government. From his songs for the Bonneville Dam Project or the five hours of interviews he gave Alan Lomax at the Smithsonian. The release of this box set makes it as good a time as any to consider Guthrie's remarkable life, career, and influence.
