Notes from ND
On Tuesday, we asked you to share your musical guilty pleasures, but this time around,
we want to hear about the opposite. There are always those incredibly popular artists
- songwriters and bands everyone else seems to love, even your music snob friends,
but you just can't enjoy their albums. What popular, much-beloved, critically acclaimed
artist(s) have you never warmed up to? It's time to take it easy on the Eagles
by Mike Seely
Shitting on the Eagles is basically a national pastime for hard-core Americana fans.
In fact, while there are several brilliant artists that alt-country loyalists are
apt to bond over, dislike of the Eagles may be the single most prevalent and unifying
force. Yet while there is ample cause to loathe the Eagles, the band's raw output
leaves no doubt that they're among the most influential bands in Americana history,
especially when taking into account some of the insurgent acts of today. Yes, Glenn
Frey's an insufferable prick. But it's time to take it easy on the band as a whole.
In order to make a legitimate case... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0011CpJLulUtWiyQpuHLqrp65oTrF0zcdAOpE1iL4SNamADp9ThUWnvS1kuUPtMhyZYQd6nfhLJBQlf7IeBAqN8zj_Q1xUSb_Cjbac8g51jqC9dxpV850ov9ob2GfFPDchaYgFVZIr87-4w7REu8gH-spa6KpCxIXTZQY1Ys3g4EP_5zYP2wJr6vxGtVg_uOR1cFwPjrWvmlVE=]

Now that T Bone's gone - Considering the music
of 'Nashville'
by Kim Ruehl
When the TV show Nashville left us last season, Juliette Barnes (played swimmingly
by Hayden "Save the cheerleader, save the world" Panettiere) was burying her mother
and, apparently, swallowing her first welcome dose of reality. Meanwhile, Rayna
James (the incredible Connie Britton) was faced with her own reality check in the
least cliffhangery of all... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0011CpJLulUtWh_v554JSQLYXHm9kmgRpFsqN-D0WqgzFa6RjryoPzXGAIammnYVFVbRsNFY1A0V_v2eY1GNKmM8kWTz_CqhzvhE7Jela0SdWAVx-4msvMJYV86xzodyKk0aAwc9P2AL9iMFcgy4qBfBdgPYn87KM-7aircuvgRBFmq1r9cbL2_Yo3TYSUVGe6jTch8xSSkM4i6yks7JH2BotX1uOP4VJ21]

Q&A with Slaid Cleaves
by Kathy Sands-Boehmer
Slaid Cleaves has some major songwriting chops. His name may not be known in every
household in the country but it should be. His songs are genuine. When you listen
to his music, you get the feeling that he's seen a whole lot of life - emotions,
situations, landscapes that you've never experienced. But, yet, through his lyrics,
and just the perfect... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0011CpJLulUtWgbKJdpeYW3plcjxrVdesHdUIklEmjtgxZPPkQescrwqByzoMyYYjA1wR36MuNyiTvHfOjyLMvi7DHvYKXEzpTRWLcYDCgJkv4LtLLQg3CM3znBxaRJABczvXs4ZZRDwCVuzNdYmH3HeRKYEsL4TwMxQqtZsRw1Ya_4gC_ocIUB8q6cidosSvuR]

Valerie June releases debut album with help from
Dan Auerbach
by Jay Minkin
The roots of Americana continue to grow and branch out as the movement goes beyond
the fiddle and pedal steel. New artists and new sounds push the envelope to expand
the genera mixing even more influences for a recipe that a grill master basting
a brisket would envy. Nashville is no longer the home for Outlaw and tabloid country
western... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0011CpJLulUtWgJo5eoaS6dEzsYp0NH55j40ijxae6Pg0YS-8qCv6oSOtNIkfsTExl0EKL7nPb22YWisnszaGgkl2zomncOb8K4jVMLUbrSI_p-dee6s5bpRIBF3YizCsxcNMNoJpM7zHs5VZ6ZzNzH1wQdzh5fVOje044ddoqRnsaPrszyfhz7IvENy7fOo1PlEMDDT3n5YRHlhPOZMxBES4jk7jydeOoMA-3vEJ_cFyg=]

Merle Haggard - Stay a little longer
by Kurt Wolff
In a 1996 feature in The Austin Chronicle, Merle Haggard told interviewer Tim Stegall,
"I'll play the game now. I'll do everything I'm supposed to do, and see if that's
what it is." He was speaking of Nashville, and his was the voice of an aging artist
frustrated with the drop in attention paid to his records in recent years. Not exactly
fighting words, especially from a guy who knew a thing or two about rebellion -
one who'd risen from a life of petty crime to become one of country music's finest
singer-songwriters. Stegall and Haggard were standing in a nondescript hotel...

Ramblin' with
Willie Sugarcapps
by the Southern Rambler
The band Willie Sugarcapps was born in front of an audience. There was no rehearsal,
no warm up, and no set list. Just Grayson Capps, Corky Hughes, Will Kimbrough, and
Savana and Anthony Crawford as Sugarcane Jane, and the spontaneous music made when
improvising fingers flew across the strings of guitars, banjos and mandolins...
