JJ Cale - Goodbye old friend
by Dan King
JJ Cale was nothing if not organic. Simple tunes with simple melodies and a blues
bent were his trademark. He wasn't a bad guitarist either, but Cale himself admits
he knew he'd have to do more than play guitar if he was going to put food on the
table. He had written "After Midnight" in 1962 and gotten on with his life, all
but giving up on a music career. Then a young fellow named Eric Clapton recorded
and released the song in 1970 and as Cale tells it, when he heard Eric doing "After
Midnight" on the radio, he decided he really was a songwriter after all... More

Curtis McMurtry, third generation storyteller, begins his journey
by Barry Gilbert
About six years ago, Kelly House Concerts in St. Louis presented Justin Townes Earle,
a young man who was all but unknown save for his famous last name. On Saturday night,
KHC presented Curtis McMurtry - son of musician James, grandson of novelist Larry
- and it will be interesting to see whether this young college grad travels a career
arc... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0014uG3OU6zJQNlsPS4cSOCE3hhnQb4wwB7-YHilSJfnWoWco0kq7DD4OOX6cxKyFpVayfOFo9xO3LaVC9LMMjFhxDns4l694gS9F9Uevb99Ye9_oQp6UnmPdFX3S8UqUzAzV5ttwVx4Gaxfd6ZBu5HevVm9LfA6bNhSwFS66swpHWoFbdZiWRVJoUpuC_YSZJOfJYLBqnu2QUcnsMDtjS1Sz4wXW1cCvq-p_84cKIxiE8=]

Concert review: Patty Griffin live in London
by Jela Webb
American Kid is Patty Griffin's first album of new material in six years. Honouring
her late father, the songs are personal, visceral, passionate, emotional and all
the more so for being sung live in the atmospheric Victorian gothic surroundings
of the Union Chapel. The auditorium was designed around an octagonal ground plan;
add in some... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0014uG3OU6zJQMrceFxmvsCmmRiIxH-wtZQFlvsOzU0QLKyK9NHH9al3GsBeLmSwdtYQaJ9Kd0WNy_HaNfq7dXy68nX0Wjf3-HFRrMNGhXc5MdMMVr5_MB5qNjKlWGCmBDjU4r4wkK0l5pgJQfE5_STwJQPIkdDEZ5zGPpJ6PcP_OauDdTCPYVcY8w-8D0VyyOoVlS3SHUExmvAMQkRIvWltoOuovUhFZCov48CvZV80zU=]

Danny & the Champions of the World - 'Stay True'
by Alan Harrison
Americana doesn't get any countrier than this. To the casual listener STAY TRUE
sounds as if it was made in Stax Studios by a collective of Nashville's finest Country
musicians, instead of the back-streets of London on a budget that meant it had to
be recorded in five long days. Opening track (Never stop building) That Old Space
Rocket, written about a day... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0014uG3OU6zJQPopIKocmG929jYHi80r66LYNpKIY6tuzLB95S_zz5198Ah3jzJ_2ZaAfxrvr2UkPhNgCSky6iLz8jDlr2vhs08iEN918GZASyGv-smG5276qXUboWT1zNrNvThXNKSlPeYfMfY1npWjK5XhGYefxtOajA49J3IH7uVIQoBcANN1Q2IHJX7O4T5vRzp82Yz8Kurv2WT5oR4uw==]

Bruce Robison - Deep in the heart of
outlaw country
by Jim Stringer
In a just world, you'd never find the milk carton empty after you've filled a bowl
with your breakfast cereal. Your hometown team would snatch the World Series from
the Yankees in the bottom of the ninth in game seven - two years in a row. Your
band would be offered a prime-time SXSW showcase, which you would turn down because
you're scheduled to play to a sold-out house at Texas Stadium that evening. Well,
it's far from a just world, but on that planet of parity, this article would not
be necessary... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0014uG3OU6zJQOHqBry5FSpqLYYxujO2hImPrXXHcPKakdDgCHXEtqVPSGNApLacAsntVr3G7CKOwfMRsH19EPA2ud3nouRu2twdf3Lvvjp--IXZ6COOy-Sx-ripeJVSgrEDGpTIWHbIP1mStqDfm3rzhv9zRhytpY9lMkNtu3SSe5iPw5ZPS5XzSQ5Hw4TtNELKKUxoBQVABQ=]

Music Festivals
Do Matter
by Gillian Turnbull
"Holeee, you're a music snob," said my brother when he met me in the beer gardens
Friday night at the Calgary Folk Festival. Taking my five minutes spent on his tarp
to hear a Bahamas song before I went to meet friends for a beer as snobbery, my
brother assumed I wouldn't make time for any act unless I'd deemed them worthy prior
to the festival. Fair enough. I didn't see much of the mainstage that night, but
it hadn't occurred to me that not listening to the music offered by... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0014uG3OU6zJQMzvXyrSVU62JSpYueOxHjpwN4ySNRoUEFj5eHTGf7D2XgBpt0f4ux07MhtvsgBsO5jXXe8j_8A6hStBhJZaEZRZKLPKmMv_flOSmR73FfU30uiAgrqjNwNO6kWbubT0v_jRIAvL2rnyCdtuKnXGPU1yo63fEoiAQI-27Sc91hVqg==]
