Notes from ND

At least in theory, music is a way to unleash emotions through the creative use
of organized sounds. But, it takes an awful lot of talent and skill (and a lot of
emotion) to create a song that comes across as truly emotionally charged. Only the
greatest singers can really make us feel what they feel when they're singing, and
the songs they create are some of the most remarkable. Patsy Cline was one such
singer, so was Levon Helm, and so is Aretha Franklin. Which singer can really stir
up your emotions, on which song? Share your favorites in the forum [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001Poj-QdalkBFFiuuzIKehAiKll5NrlqjuylqNwSOXz8dgF0aQhlijvJOEf1IW6tWBReYyuOfb0lBQzg77StlrNc_jGKQSdgQYhQLV46rhiXvy7OqWvPTSlMErf1PG2K36f39tfMdJKD7HYSFRg7Q-jhsKbHZsq8H-p7ZxwNG6YVhXKeWcBXwrQY2LZ7FLrUhy],
or just keep reading for some highlights from the week.

Blind Willie Johnson: Lamps, Middle Eastern weddings, and justice

by Gary Burnett

Blind Willie Johnson is one of the most influential of the early bluesmen, with
his songs, covered down through the years by Rev Gary Davis and Fred McDowell, but
also by more recent rock bands like the Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, Bruce Springsteen
and the White Stripes. Johnson has the distinction of having one of his songs feature
on a special recording sent aboard the Voyager spacecraft, launched in 1977 to head
beyond the outer solar system into deep space - the Voyager Golden Record also contains
music by Beethoven, Mozart, and Stravinsky ... John Hartford - Preserving the legacy of

the father of Newgrass

by Ernie Hill

"Play it like it was wrote, boys," Bill Monroe said. "We never verbalized about
an arrangement and the only requirement for a song to be in the band repertoire
was that one person could perform it all the way through." John Hartford said. John
who? The Father of Newgrass. The inadvertent shepherd of the Roots music movement,
the bassy-voiced ... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001Poj-QdalkBE-s4GomH7fmhmdrV5A-uDNyNloClT8fqekSbwcJBboS_NJN47toaJdtzrS8XowInB1yt1tMTx6TkrEE8t22NjZIiS0i1GGSFgdwuHPETDsTMtx8pMR3qTSuMtJTvayN9MfcKhLOn1dJHg9uqX0g-dUnAQD1UHxahyucqwjJo8fEp2lCH93y4cWBbtw-HV4GNjHFkXwm-rLmc5_3JtYFvoABuCPYXiidhg=]

Tift Merritt live in Raleigh, NC

by newsgirlstacy

A Tift Merritt show is special anywhere, but it's an especially good time if you
can catch her in her hometown of Raleigh. Early in her two-hour set at the North
Carolina Museum of Art, which started in the pouring rain and ended in a thick mist,
she said "I'm not going to start talking to y'all like you're neighbors just yet,
even though you are," but quickly ... Dwight Yoakam Q&A: Guitars, Nudie suits, etc., etc.

by Barry Gilbert

Country music star Dwight Yoakam is spending the summer reconnecting with fans on
a tour that takes him to a mix of venues, from theaters and festivals to state fairs
and casinos. It's a variety he appreciates, but he's especially partial to festivals,
having played Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days, Bonnaroo in Tennessee and Stagecoach
in California ... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001Poj-QdalkBGvAwlGjErhVPeAUcR-ZEMyMFr89WLlE1U2EbJ_0y4uGsYfarKGqbRf9A3Z2W0VNbYg4Cs0PHB3hgvAcRYKqbq0M5zB6OkPqiBZfwjOPqZ_L3pwH3La7wy3nKvmB9NsNnPCZtSM5-Y1X7z_GL6_ZtCupY9JmK6RNlWO2fS7VZzSmhvtlYaZwexMyq4yIskijXk1YVZ5vGuRBA==]

Laurie Lewis & Tom Rozum - Ten years after

by Claire Levine

Laurie Lewis is weeding the back yard of the Berkeley home she has owned for 30
years. A crop of yellow-flowered oxalis is threatening to choke out the bright orange
calendula and the calla lillies. Lewis has been on tour for most of the previous
month; this is her first chance to get her hands on the garden. She and her singing
partner, Tom Rozum, had spent a week touring small cities in the Pacific Northwest.
She then joined a pickup band of bluegrassers (Ron Stewart, David Parmley, Randy
Graham, Roger Bush, Richard Brown and Dick Woodrich)... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001Poj-QdalkBF8Svl87fZRFNXKtxFqGRepzn_h-cZFVwunfCDHDi1K_nIfMF1O6bLmUavTkkAVf0Y6glQqiJUkUfDPvECGzOL3i8fIhlEHaPYsWohAC3gRIsn5xExMeAcApzPvzbfCo1S8zMPOsd3T5C_5sEmMtHrwSiRh5ZzIQlRAEUZQFhLwRw==]

Barry McGuire & the Lost Treasure of '69

by Terry Roland

Barry McGuire's film career was, thankfully, a short one. With titles like Werewolves
on Wheels, there wasn't much to brag about. But, his one close-up extended role
in 1967's The President's Analyst offers an opportunity to see through a time capsule
into McGuire's world and persona as it was then. He basically played himself in
a character role of a "hippie" named ...
