Notes from ND
Sure, those of us who are die-hard fans of independent and traditionally-minded
music love to play like we'd never get pulled into the world of pop music, no matter
how good the artist or song. But the truth is, we all have guilty pleasures. Whether
it's the soundtrack to the movie 'Beaches' that we happily play to death, or a brand
new disc from the latest pop boy band, few of us are strong enough to resist the
appeal of catchy music when we find it. So, step on into the No Depression Confession

Her name is Earl: Shelby Earl and
the desert church of doo-wop
by Mike Seely
Shelby Earl insists she's not a country singer. Good luck with that. When you're
name's Shelby Earl, you could perform nothing but Pointer Sisters covers and likely
still get branded with a banjo; such a moniker earmarks you for a career spent evoking
hay bales and wide-open spaces, whether you like it or not. But, in truth, Shelby
Earl is not a country artist, even if her rich, assertive voice is often--and accurately--compared
to that of Neko Case. Yet Earl's devotion to traditional instrumentation, throwback
harmonies, introspective songwriting and majestic melodies ought to make her plenty
appealing to Americana fans ... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001efMErrVVGKnu1KIJUW7i0Nv4OQUpJa_lUNjtcrqpOAz-AKMk3aUrRyYEiAgjMm9KDqN5Mjf43gx3g0rqOTcaZTX_mu3FjO0HglCfkX0RjQztVD-q2WMx4a1eC5pek6hRSzBTffBGb5ctrObyPdZ95GrNUcZAL5sCi-mTLbgfs-fi1hqQqi-UlBtGu1PFrGI5OD3Kk22fdfWjbO1y2PxUkhBNoRKCpIru]

ZZ Top Q&A: Same three guys, same three chords
by Barry Gilbert
A chance to interview Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top? Hell, yeah. Unfortunately, Gibbons
is not crazy about doing phone interviews, so we had to settle for an email exchange.
That's good, because it sure is easier. But that's bad, because there's no give
and take, followup questions or a chance to salvage unresponsive answers. (Not that
Billy really did that.) That little ... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001efMErrVVGKnGUALmYpDPPpILhRZtbzSnuDrxg62YQv7TVVM7aT6B3npU0dyWpCUaJC7vKtvj4Rw_IYtYUbjYt7gWngsh_wpkSvcNR6oOrh2O4IxxLZXug8_VHdfIAgdGkHIZhcmuQD9URGAXzAz8FPRraoJ8z5c3VLyPjRtmwwqO-IojUs38JmFfidVdNFcWqwkpc3q3OVE=]

Mortality and Loudon Wainwright III's 'Older Than My Old Man Now'
by Kathy Sands-Boehmer
Loudon Wainwright. First heard of him via his legendary "Dead Skunk in the Middle
of the Road" back in the day. He's a musician that has always been on my radar
but it hasn't been until the past few years that his star has risen by leaps and
bounds in my own musical world. I won't bore you with all the accolades (and there

The problem with Mumford & Sons
(or, Congrats, Banjo, you made it)
by Gillian Turnbull
I clearly remember having lunch one day in 2004 or 2005 with my good friend and
my advisor, both of them in their late-40s, with (or getting) PhDs in music, former
musicians; the things that qualify someone as a "music expert". Conversations with
them could be intimidating, but also really fun. On this particular day, though,
I was not about to back down. "The... Daniel Gore - Mountain music,
by the book
by David Menconi
Horace Kephart isn't a household name, but his name is in a lot of households. That's
because of Charles Frazier's epic 1997 novel Cold Mountain - this year's National
Book Award winner, and the Titanic of literary fiction with 1.5 million copies sold.
Look up the acknowledgments page in Cold Mountain, and you'll find Kephart's seminal
1913 book Our Southern Highlanders credited as one of the dozen or so sources for
the novel's historical background. Daniel Gore hopes to put Kephart's name into
a few more households with Ways That Are Dark (Elephant ... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001efMErrVVGKk8XRHhwdm2fCCNmBwcFtb6950W2nCpEzlACK1Egk_Zjc-nR6In65sJx2bFh426LdMYkcTLxuGoG7fvKLPgt7RqmKqFrDS-D_biQ98hegnEoCRvWnAPPsikbdOoTDRemZgVf1VO4MwocBRG-7n7P-0079SlRtW9GRZ1H5YGgkytiV4bJFj-AUgH]

Linda Ronstadt reveals Parkinson's diagnosis
