Notes from ND

We all know that one of the fundamental building blocks in contemporary music is
the now-and-then presence of a guitar solo. There was a time when the guitar was
more of a rhythm section, but it's gotten to be that it's the primary focal instrument
in a lot of bands, especially for singer-songwriters and roots-fueled troupes. In
bluegrass, the guitar is a powerhouse source of solos. So why does it seem a number
of great bluegrass groups have been leaving guitar solos almost entirely out of
the mix lately? Do you notice? Do you miss it? Chime in on bluegrass guitar in this

Interview with Tim O'Brien & Darrell Scott

by Chris Mateer

Tim O'Brien and Darrell Scott are surely considered two of the best songwriters
and musicians working today. They each have appeared on numerous recordings, performed
with some of the true legends of the bluegrass and string band genres, and have
their own impressive discographies. In addition to their own individual careers,
Darrell and Tim have joined forces again following up their intimate, masterful,
and casual recording, 2005's... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001EX--Fwd7zi5YWeFf6MTv9tK2t3Hvr6U8Yd9czq8tr2rGWx8Qfs8GH1I_CpDSVjFe-Mq2yACDjJB3eSRcW_2pE5S3mH0LVz3FWtoemWXg8bKRwbAWqs-g6gd9qMXcCo6rjn15pDoE5-UJRWVJoCWxvVO8OyMtZmf6yX-tZIqdj_ih9mQPt5ESYP1jffJGfC6SPAGnaA9idws=]

ACL Fest preview, Part II: Interview with Sara Quinn of Tegan & Sara

by Michael Bialas

Tegan and Sara's first performance in Austin was almost their last. "We were young,
we were like 19 and we were super-intimidated," said Sara Quin, the younger (by
8 minutes) twin sister in the Canadian rock duo Tegan and Sara. "And definitely
well, well in over our heads. I remember coming back to Calgary where I grew up
and I remember crying to... Interview with Ryan Bingham on the eve of 'Tomorrowland'

On September 18, Academy Award winner, Grammy winner, and all-around gifted, young

Review of Band of Horses - 'Mirage Rock'

by Barbara Bruederlin

Mirage Rock makes me miss Band of Horses. There are just enough touches of the original
scruffy indie folk-rock band in Band of Horses' latest album to make me nostalgic
for everything that I loved about them when they first blew my mind with 2005's
Everything All The Time. Nobody wants to make (or hear) an album that sounds just
like the previous... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001EX--Fwd7zi7ixc7B-H7Ku-C4qnm6qgrZlUXEU9fykUBbZWa0uAGty-XucxH6IHw5UDQhu590Aie3Jb-JTjGuC9FuzQut0s31T1c-T31lxUTnIN-NPgW3hQDoSdhPSxEMds9ZPo3ohN-40JcL8Kw9dltieaNokZRQ_RMa6xelot71pA96tCrRkw==]

Rayland Baxter - "feathers & fishHooks"

by Nancy Dunham

Don't think the copy editor-vexing capitalization used on the title and liner notes
of 'feathers&fishHooks,' the latest release by new Nashville artist Rayland Baxter,
signals anything but a love for fun. Indeed, Baxter, who has become something of
a constant on tours by Grace Potter & the Nocturnals and The Civil Wars, is a traditional
Americana artist in the best sense... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001EX--Fwd7zi44cpmHPWdKrcD33EX5_2nlz2BR1IJcl4fhc_KExrESBifgOXqyBBBpvGPjnB3ICDjB-WoBR8eYleK82n9Y92k4IoQ6WWaQGkl63ISnOU1tD3IQ-jSvWVBXMoCVLJ5YKPLbsBucFWAUudroZeAP3HYCP5XzI0lY2xNxJsYZKktFYt6svzdAWijy5kcZ1PtHu9s=]

Star and Micey - 'I Can't Wait'

by Kim Ruehl

Memphis is a town of grit and soul - known for raw, passionate music which runs
the gamut from country and blues to soul and back again. So it makes perfect sense
that a trio by the name of Star & Micey might emerge from such a rich musical tradition.
However, where much of Memphis' musical past seems to pull from life's most emotional
darknesses, Star & Micey seem to source their craft from a far more sunny, whimsical
place. There's country and roots in there... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001EX--Fwd7zi7paV8xQmP1ndlkqFMpoQ-Adh5OYyu1czKsXOkjGPGuPJ8JrMeR_7E0S6T_EMJyT1uG9HGy8PpMmy0UjTNGtdnlolcAsd6gTWt3_Gisl4iRd28D2tQBtwucEf4V6ptbQM_UaAZMKgyXCOs8_gzXh_hG6DuAHuMTBJppAoyZ7jl3ZQ==]

Ralph Stanley - The blue, blue grass of home

by Jon Weisberger

Doctor Ralph Stanley has a new album coming out. That's hardly news in itself -
he's been putting them out biannually for the last 30 years or so - but this one
is different: Clinch Mountain Country, a two-disc set, pairs the 71-year old veteran
banjo man with more than 30 guests in a project meant as much to provide a hot item
for sale at personal appearances as it is to honor one of the most distinctive voices
in the history of country music. He may be a legend and a national treasure... More

Old-time fiddler Rayna Gellert has a new record out that marks a beautiful new direction
for her. Over the years, old-time American music has grown many roots and branches:
southern fiddling, country blues, bluegrass, gospel... the list goes on. And then
there are the mellow modernists who invoke a sense of mountain melancholy while
making the listener... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001EX--Fwd7zi5KO6CXs9I4XyYhu_1nCrF7kE_ctVOyjIAxN8MR62IF2_fhOOnKFlPUw5GFVpM15CKtKPjZIhK2sIVJAJ0fVilrU6Dh_SYfV-LBxoUIKtq3fKxYL3VBxBFnWYIIrq4T_c-A2XHDp1ipIQ484feV7r96AdBJPkCfoeauVh0YIbP-wg==]
