Notes from ND

It's a standard truth of the trade that if you're trucking around the country and
playing in bars, there are going to be groups in every audience (and sometimes entire
audiences) who are just there to get drunk and rowdy. Some artists have made their
peace with this, while others let their frustration be known by everyone in the
crowd - calling out members of the audience and giving them the stink-eye. It almost
never solves the situation, and can downright ruin the show for some fans. What
do you think? How's a band to deal with a less-than-adoring crowd? Should they get
sarcastic; call them out; or simply ignore it and play the best set possible? Chime

ACL Fest preview: Interview with First Aid Kit

by Michael Bialas

Sweet-singing Swedish sisters Johanna and Klara Soderberg didn't exactly get the
royal treatment during one of the first times they stepped on American soil. But
they did get treated to a meal at America's diner. "Austin was the first city we
went to in America," said Johanna, Klara's older sister in the sublime roots duo
First Aid Kit. She laughed thinking back at their introduction to the Texas capital
before performing at South by Southwest in 2010. "I remember we went to like a Denny's.
And we were kind of like baffled... Lucy Kaplansky's 'Reunion'

by Kim Ruehl

I'm not sure how it was that I came upon Lucy Kaplansky's music. She's never been
what anyone outside of certain songwriter circles would call "famous," despite the
fact that she came up through the same music scene which fostered Shawn Colvin and
Suzanne Vega, not to mention songwriters' songwriters like John Gorka. Her name
is a secret... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001ugDY6B_Dw-g8RzlGYSIzZOcH4xqUCVFf1YmDaOEBcbd2RidxkGeF8x1-jh4XY6PBZKU0Ud6NnctEXIMWQ9v53VO00Qi0frLK2B_t2ViiYK9QWWLGdNDX10TJDad5vdTWIEVQjpN3hs7nw63JVB__ycgDqRJ-BhOq3MhdqF0CGP3z3-xO4ANxUg==]

Review of Nick Ferrio - 'Introducing Nick Ferrio &

His Feelings'

by Justin Wesley

Nick Ferrio is a country singer-songwriter from Peterborough, ON who has played
bass for The Burning Hell for the past six years. Now, Ferrio is venturing out with
a solo effort of exquisite country songs under the cleverly named (and inarguably
fitting) backing band moniker of Nick Ferrio & His Feelings. The nine songs that
comprise Introducing Nick Ferrio... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001ugDY6B_Dw-gzWZZPcUGKFMJFQZEF89vXudA5-uJhEMnuj86_ewqVvh2T15kYGIjOCHPrk_FRc9WL5C9ONDATywo-4JT-tZgMWKtANWoHIRyE6iGQyn4fz5vjsDNCU4Dj7bfEbMQ-1L6-xqkHLYSWfODqdwu4ikG7Z6D5YGI2PlqPOvwSiK65S16-dftQQ2s9wubHZTM9KPdB5UBCvMmhYi4_r0Tjm9s3]

John Hiatt's 'Mystic Pinball'

by big boy

On the cover shot of his latest, Mystic Pinball, John Hiatt looks like a blurry
version of Tom Waits. But when you open him up, it's vintage Hiatt at his hyena-yowling
best. "We're All Right Now" is a great opener, the breakout single, blasting away
with an instant imprint capability as strong as his '83 triumph, "Riding With The
King." The first time through, that cut... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001ugDY6B_Dw-gKR5LMJRbE2PWRzqOyOJapA_0cWc9XBKogu5F8srx5v8gDChimr9S9_1dPzMFiXqT6L7w9KE9Go3pQzbkeQXJfj9c_MkGsLnDQMC6VuozRjwWcn_TCFh-68TW1hjQMKHbS6e9CAawGojbPQ_vqvYlbXC20SEkGwEsOZ_0ZgWI09Iy_QRMPbr0Z]

Star and Micey - 'I Can't Wait'

by Kim Ruehl

Memphis is a town of grit and soul - known for raw, passionate music which runs
the gamut from country and blues to soul and back again. So it makes perfect sense
that a trio by the name of Star & Micey might emerge from such a rich musical tradition.
However, where much of Memphis' musical past seems to pull from life's most emotional
darknesses, Star & Micey seem to source their craft from a far more sunny, whimsical
place. There's country and roots in there... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001ugDY6B_Dw-iUr8ycINRUNrnCkKfpmG0Op6IuM6VqAKHF4yASsG8DmDYZhSco8CpHKvYoc4l1Y6yx0QaO8r6zFQTODl-D0hpvRvAHEDAYODI2BF4owHMZV3fsFctiyvn58HlzZqN5DvyZG8xETcwzeeRwUDSJq6X6fc13cRlCFXeFmkVEk3dx6g==]

Tracy Grammer - Beautiful Dreamer

by Russell Hall

The sudden death of Dave Carter in July 2002 forced Tracy Grammer to choose between
two options, she says: either go on the road and continue to perform, or stop singing
entirely. Adding to her dilemma was the fact that Carter - who Grammer described
in a poignant website-posting to fans as her "soul mate and partner in everything
worldly and otherwise" - had been the outgoing half of the duo, exuding onstage
charisma while Grammer offered stolid, quiet support. In the end, the outpouring...

Mumford & Sons Daytrotter session

by Hearth Music

Having just written about Daytrotter's upcoming Justin Townes Earle / Dawes vinyl
split, I 'd moved on to other writing projects and wasn't paying a lot of attention
when they first announced a large, exclusive Daytrotter session with Mumford & Sons.
Plus, I'm that horrible kind of hipster that wears a T-shirt like "I listen to bands
that don't even exist"... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001ugDY6B_Dw-jYB0gLXRViaPM5BxTFQPOyIj7AhJbvTO4FxIZRgfA4S2CQj3EpJ42w_OezFcXgUJa24PB2ESVt-k8HnEeuUW9I_BI3v9WdmgfMRgeGpUHoCag2qgEwrwXUhctUgkOoucOEopSzHsNBv1BNJdCiBBI9orgGp4DyDevL0uiWAZv8bn6jfCHzFl6k]
