Notes from ND
It's been about 40 years since the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band dropped an album which
has come to help define this music we call Americana, pulling together elements
of folk, rock, and bluegrass for a sound which proved hugely influential. Now,
the band has reissued a triple-vinyl package of Will the Circle Be Unbroken with
new liner notes, remastered and repackaged for 21st Century audiences. This pleases
us so much; we'd like to give away a couple copies and a deluxe autographed package.

Beth Hart - Learning to love the hard way

by Rick J. Bowen

Beth Hart is a true force of nature who has been compared to singers like Janis
Joplin and the late, great Etta James. She recently wrapped up a European tour with
most dates sold out, and was voted the #1 Best International Vocalist for 2012 by
the UK's Blues Matters magazine. Hart just finished tracking a second album with
Joe Bonamasa and is preparing for a second European tour and the April 2, 2013
release of her new album Bang Bang Boom Boom. She kicked off the project in a killer
way: at the specific request of Jeff Beck, she joined the guitarist performing the
Etta James classic "I'd Rather Go Blind," in Washington... Interview with Pharis & Jason Romero on their album 'Long Gone Out West Blues'

by Chris Mateer

The last time I spoke with Pharis and Jason Romero was when they released their
last studio album A Passing Glimpse. As an admirer of their banjo-making company,
J Romero Banjos, it was exciting to learn the behind-the scenes details of their
passion for building instruments and making music. Since our chat last time, A
Passing Glimpse has... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001YGmfK3p7Vu5guJ5vksVfVPRGqS2BdZmeqya8fe17Gq13FnbO5ZAWIjQQfCoxbQ29ZLK02584OsC3gb9vzz_mwgt87qaQpCXTYEmhBEkSKqFEIvpMwPu9WK2JEUKstBQHueqTZbxOrXxm_N8E5Y6AjwdPchGfgOIxSigAH7B-BDqaRumGU79It2QWs_lUM2OILYevae3dKutwDPChum6SzKuZcmSUywd2]

"The Weight" - When a song becomes an anthem

by Joanna Colangelo

There are a number of songs that serve as a musical roadmap in my life, and for
every one of them, I can remember the exact moment when I heard the song - the exact
moment that the song made me stop in my tracks, grab the record sleeve, look at
the album photos and read the liner notes in a desperate attempt to learn everything
I could about the music... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001YGmfK3p7Vu7a6sh_DcZl5ihPYaY4oaXG-ZItk6P1z64YN7hbxJN-VmQu_jkYkjTE_gj6gcvetjwYQg4aIYqCo8Nnf7SfynnFK5rds-Mkb-gFBwrWPnVv7uMPnGs7pBa3_GcHapDU9fUefA5iOVdYsOgXC8qFaXDj9GNICRU2YgKFnNqeZ522M2nZzn2wVGV-VhaeCyrldZM=]

Hanging in the studio with the Fall Risk

by Deborah Grabien

Once upon a time, when multi-tracking and isolation meant something very different
in Recording Studio Land than they do today, I spent some time in that particular
environment. I've been in some world-class studios: Wally Heider Studio C, the Record
Plant (Sausalito edition). I have some fond memories, of the making of some legendary
albums... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001YGmfK3p7Vu4IQ1jPSuF5OwdMVz5lBy3uBJEdqBa4wOwHZBaNGNMqlTl2Pt0wQdfKpZSQbZcKgS8LGXn2GAjW4cdmw3TU82QhaKRxHz4nYnVbIOO_9_nfaJjcPnvMO06cwt7v61Fo566FbgiZiOCYU_izk6v5xGgLa5sh2w4kIbQzREqd_hEWUM9yEqPL7Pb7KQFbCLsO69Z-6Ox7eJ6GM60HkdNWsm1fNZbc9o8wNGI=]

Neal Casal - Sunshine in the shadows

by Kevin Hawkins

At the time I wrote it, the line was no more than a cursory guess on my part. In
wrapping up a review of Neal Casal's sublime Fade Away Diamond Time in the Winter
'95/'96 issue of this magazine, I wrote that "It's doubtful that Zoo Records will
drop the promotional bucks on this release that American did with (Pete) Droge and
the Jayhawks." In retrospect, it was the biggest understatement of my life. "It
was the coolest part of that review, and you didn't know how truthful that was at
the time," Casal confirmed in a recent interview... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001YGmfK3p7Vu6WkoPHUcnzwR2dgQf1QkXMGu717K4wxDYo_sb_GKqmmaWQqedl0QA5JUGXj14INKs6kFK-7zd8AuHH9rjZE1lxV3g88T7aAFDb3vfKlKDcivBepNPswxiPbeVDyGBbEliS82-CA77O9Gw36jVeWquEx860OU3uQHzfyw06roWRaA==]

On Holly Williams, Kacey Musgraves, and "the year of

the woman"

in country music

by Kim Ruehl

If you haven't figured it out yet, Holly Williams has made a country record which
could, one might imagine, in a perfect world, reset the gauge as to what constitutes
a country music album these days. If I had to name an Album of the Year right now,
her new record would be duking it out with Kelly & Bruce. That's what I thought,
at least, the first time I hit play and heard her sing her way through the bitterness...
