Notes from ND
"Folk music" has countless definitions, depending on who you ask, what time of day
it is, where Orion is in the night sky, and how many shots of whiskey you've had
first. The phrase could refer to songs passed down through generations, representing
a specific community or group of people. Or, it could just refer to a guy with a
beard strumming an acoustic guitar. Regardless of how you identify folk music,
someone has posted a forum looking for a list of the most beloved folk songs of
all time. Chime in [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0017O3MlAKrbnXf8N-ySTmHh5TftuexRby-9nM8Yw8WieEESkfkA-TaoUYhTdcMXEeoJ37L8EZGeM4wYAMCIB3cnzhgentUbf692y9ywlDZauxTxg6P5UhIKvGKCWCSu4afrQGr9GlFJqKEn-ODX-iRW_fJM3T7nt6AmRy1yPTwWd1aNaN2M9m85ziRSddItDsJ]

Jason Molina, RIP
by Drew de Man
So sad to hear about Jason Molina's passing. He was truly a talented songwriter
and bandleader with a beautiful voice and a soul that belongs among the greats like
Townes Van Zandt, Pablo Neruda, Will Oldham, Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. Molina's
perspective on art and music was shaped growing up in the rust belt, in Lorain,
Ohio--a place some might call a cultural backwater. It is worth noting that the
town also produced the great Toni Morrison, and Don Novello (aka Father Guido Sarducci).
But, like so many talented minds... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0017O3MlAKrbnV8-5WF-KVoSauscCDElj52uOZtZE63icsV8ToMgZKTx8aLL54BGYRyt0kZFIo5Gq8UBsbtTEoE5wZKS_dJfdMbEWKMEtgiqTpuRZsXUE3KcCmrm7leM2s1tZGOcGG9sVTZkrPHYo_6RBAy22OXlUYsVeh7C8P4TgQ=]

Jeffrey Foucault's Cold Satellite transmits a Yeats-like vibe
by Kevernacular
"Cast a cold eye On life, on death. Horseman, pass by!" W. B Yeats' chilling epitaph
for his own grave has always haunted me, since I first read it. I suspect it might
also haunt singer-songwriter Jeffrey Foucault. Because it is the final statement
of modern poetry's greatest bard, I see more in it than simple nihilistic abdication.
Casting a cold eye is a striving... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0017O3MlAKrbnW6ae1q1Dkma8Zv0GyRS_Sl4pPlb9xNIZQRMRVBM4osXICmPR-hoGi8vOOPocqD5i6huusv87CvWVuNeLUt_GspB5nEgdGdfabbOcSPzq3mo6AIjA2SkvUVyQt0D6e4I_wOOmnbHv7pRcElO7Yj1FP2pD1WvVi4u2ajfoAuDHYABVCic6rsPtuopnvaA-azLbhIb7Dh_KJOS56hw3yNmYEh]

Interview with Griffin House
by Jay Minkin
I have a confession ... I'm a homer. I love my sports teams almost as much as I
love the singer/songwriters that come from Ohio. A story on Griffin House back
in 2008 during the Flying Upside Down tour took me behind the music and the life
of the Springfield, Ohio native. A college degree from Miami of Ohio in 2002 in

Clairy Brown & the Bangin' Rackettes - Baby Caught the Bus CD review
by big boy
It looks and sounds like the Commitments led by Amy Winehouse.
Melbourne's Clairy Brown & The Bangin' Rackettes is the best stuff to come along
in decades. The dancing part of the Bangin' Rackettes, who also sing, rivals the
Raelettes or Ikettes. The instrumental contributors seem to have gobbled up all
the grits, guts and soul from every big name '60s soul...More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0017O3MlAKrbnVL07fRHWfoB9xbeesZ3qIezCw3MqdiaA3yUInEuV23hAWLwcwnbdk6MoN7ChrXzomFEdk8ctTS092B2dFwEQPPgLi4ySgJXvh28ya5ZmJRmaSBh3W4I_AOLBzR69F64TfkN5T50hRNiJPGgPCox9V6dZGN2_cGnebf8ELnRzfV9o6N_d8A9ObEHCARZL2wcgs2yIVcZ_A-Z3ZA1zOzk-0BUrD-Shu9mHE=]

Evan Dando - I don't need to be forgiven
by Matt Ashare
It wasn't all that long ago that Evan Dando seemed to be on the verge of conquering
the world as the leader of a little punk band out of Boston named after a little
box of sour candies. Then again, in the always fickle realm of pop music, where
the shelf life of a major trend has only continued to shrink as the information
age has taken root and an entire career can be encapsulated in a couple of successful
albums, the former Lemonheads frontman has been out of the spotlight for what counts
as ages. By any measure, though, Dando's first flirtation with mainstream success
was a brief and messy affair... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0017O3MlAKrbnV7ZbUEskgMibX3MTepFaZKeAawoSPJKMdweyaEgw0WbqARWGFLzkUFw8WXFeWvEBQ0SJHHKF0n4G_tDi3d2RUzBfTe5MnQ840aurN9t02hQVOfstGOTvS_F00c9EzvDJC8o4N8hcRZF58-Sctcx9SwPBaMRRnLfd4_dV09HX7oow==]

The death of Larry Robinson - Tragedy in Temecula
by Easy Ed
Saturday night, and as I thought to check the computer one more time before I hit
the mattress, there was a message from my son. "Did you see this?" he asked, and
posted a link from the San Diego Union Tribune. And as I read the article I began

man who worked for years... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0017O3MlAKrbnWzPlzMnyA6JlU4d176Ts0FZnJoeOR-KnGpsELBrHzIPbhSul_vZVEcTgsFRaQsuf0l3b3_xYV4R5iE3OKrmERAZMxa5q5JodIGxJAfddv9z_TxfbU4maHctBxXyAJ6-_w5t5x4L8ySZuCIVRULRBuzZc4FwGSGqvnanCysuwWWPlHgwbe1n2T-cFtvRwRSxEZjM1aRXdeomA==]

Dating your own songs
by Rod Picott
Q-I'm sure there are songs that you include in every show. Is there any song that
you get tired of singing night after night after night? Along those lines how do
you keep the songs fresh for yourself? A-Yes, there are songs I grow weary of.
It's a relationship of sorts that you have with songs you perform. There are nights
when I'm happy to hang out with them, I feel close... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0017O3MlAKrbnXaafW55lcdHoBOgB3CDzizmeafgwy0a6K3PxjlvFhRdAKdXK09sZ1k6OCT8lHNuMpWcFBAu1NzqhqEShL2tzbFpoWx8gYwsJI2eDHpJUEihVk2FhqxXAPnYDRBGqXzSeBreZdfOBEcWvNvz4g-hL6GLRWh0jxXRpM=]
