Notes from ND

Sure, picking from the entire history of modern music to come up with the five best
songwriters of all time seems like a silly game at the onset, but it can be an interesting
way to get to know a person. Do they go for the obvious and name the most famous
people who have moved music in un-ignorable, inarguable ways? Or do they reach
into the obscure and pull out artists who have moved them personally, whether or
not anyone else has ever heard them? At any rate, it's an interesting way to pass
the time. So, chime in on the forum [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001O2DAImKYpoxb-gSwVncfY-sxBYiyRwpULLCi2T5K6hm311B2iUGN1D09C2LKn1iDhf8P07TmkLPUNkuWLNmojQo0jukz0TiYCKGFW_RxNfpiGCY9zhTJjimSNbTNYIcv80SIgmhlXtYZdhbs8pcBMMg5nrfsa11qOi4qQ6_GTXM=]

The Overmountain Men - 'The Next Best Thing'

by Alan Harrison

Reviewing albums is akin to buying three bottles of wine for £10 in a supermarket.
Without fail the wine will be palatable. Occasionally you will open a bottle with
a non-descript label and, during the first sip, know you've discovered something
very special indeed. You then have a dilemma; do you keep it a secret or do you
scream it from the rooftops? The Overmountain Men are just that bottle of wine
and they will remain our little secret, won't they? The band revolves around Bob
Crawford - bass player in the Avett Brothers - and singer Dave Childres with a
host... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001O2DAImKYpoxe8IaJWTHKqnzTPXPgw4U2LLSdX2uEr2jjOxMqFDm1kFPqfAvoQnFst9oKQKkSrvO8Vd786Tyadxqcb0djHZX2buYujIDAp8murmkIZwB8sUkElgedapgePlmcFlC7xQ1-HLvTCt1smD6mPA4ZDvZiRnenjhmIZati2CUBE08S7d7502XRoWnfyKS-J3di69o=]

Suzy Boguss talks about a new album as her folk-filled tour continues

by Nancy Dunham

Suzy Bogguss is moving back to her country roots on her next record but that doesn't
mean she's abandoning the folk side of her sound. Her 2011 release of American Folk
Songbook showed a different side of the much-honored singer-songwriter who shares
in the Grammy Award nomination for Best Folk Album for This One's for Him: A Tribute...

Dennis Wilson - 'Pacific Ocean Blue' revisited

by Rob Finch

When a rock star dies young, in sad and mysterious circumstances, their works often
become mythologised. That's particularly true of Dennis Wilson and the once-rare
Pacific Ocean Blue. Yet, despite the bullshit surrounding it, this remains a fine
album. Even for those non-Beach Boys fans out there, it's worth plunging into these
azure shallows of 70s mellow rock... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001O2DAImKYpoxAi58oANTfwGOs7D1j_21a1R0uewawR-b9Xtp5jttCWmK0DDRwW8IPrPakr9TGv0c4QkHvSBn-Fd9dhV6qIaKzLkjY386pFlUsmapeUCKrissxoAFdiNGz4yTYYhbAI1lMqWoazaKBomuQ6kN8KfCEguV772sorVKOkIf7ZaRc0F9LUQFkisOkC6YpSz7Dt6U=]

Review of Lilly Hiatt & the Dropped Ponies - 'Let Down'

by Rick J Bowen

The expectations are often set quite high for the progeny of well-known artists
who decide to follow in their parents' footsteps, often leading to mixed results.
No doubt Nashville's Lilly Hiatt felt this pressure being the daughter of well-known
singer-songwriter John Hiatt, but her debut album Let Down rises to the challenge.
Like her father, Hiatt knows how to turn... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001O2DAImKYpowIErD710e05Y6gRZKwYPPxIeYF8ddxPlXtD6FF2gLLIGlHK40Q9u16kbcDNHcKeIBr52pWDWvYW48zL53aAh7nMU5xbY3-exunP9hNszNLfi4YvTzjmR1lFDHmPKZbvnFxTPJi1suQ0xT2TXOReJsedX6TfspJDKShrlZtk_ke7jmYSoiKLiGWLnYzNVZkixXpzaUdXKJOwg==]

Kelly Willis & Bruce Robison - 'Cheaters Game'

by Kim Ruehl

For years at Christmas, the music-loving crowds in Austin, Tex., have been lapping
up the delicious harmonies and sweet, natural musicality which seems to magically
happen when Kelly Willis and her husband Bruce Robison take the stage together.
Eventually, it was bound to happen that the couple would become as beloved in their
duo work as they have with their solo efforts. Then, in 2008, Willis announced she
was going to take some time off from the road. She's made a handful of appearances
since then but, understandably, a considerable swirl of interest has been blowing
around the couple's first full-on studio effort. Even as Willis... The Northwesternmost cut of all

by Peter Blackstock

I woke up at the crack of dawn - hell, even before the crack of dawn - and headed
off to the docks in downtown Seattle to catch the first ferry of the morning (at
5:20am) to Bremerton, which is where the USS Missouri had been moored for the last
few decades until they towed it away on Saturday afternoon, destination Pearl Harbor.
(A nice bit of historical symmetry awaits it there. For the U.S., World War II began
at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941; the surrender of Japan was signed on the decks
of the Missouri on Sept. 2, 1945.) I'd missed the Missouri when it was towed past
the Seattle... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001O2DAImKYpow8ITjYH4F8zMC6yC1qzk7Q8SqyryBOOOe9Ldqz8qXb4sZ6qh8zbdKnL5obxBRsEFoHAt8VWIySppQ_LrX6unx8mHFsDnYvmIbXOuRbUJFgkJOGR5u6AANhXjIpvoDl8pVVAewT-gBNCgEyfir8bpa04GuEdzsWmSGhBOsx9IQZqg==]
