Notes from ND

Not every music artist is a natural performer. Some people spend their whole lives
studying and honing their songwriting skills, never quite tapping in to whatever
it might be that would make them light up a stage. But, put the CD on at home,
and you're transported through the music. Then there are those others, who put on
such a great show, the music itself becomes less important than the concert experience
itself. Those two talents can intersect; and when they do, it can make for an outstanding
live music experience. What is the best band or artist you've ever seen live? Chime

The ballad of Father John Misty

by Jay Minkin

So here's a true story. When I went to the checkout line to purchase the new Father
John Misty release Fear Fun on compact disc, the young female cashier was mesmerized
by the album's packaging. Hard to believe, that it was some old hipster who turned
her onto one of the highlight releases of the past year. The outside packaging isn't
the half of it...wait until you open it up. Joshua Tillman was brought up in a Christian
household in Baltimore and had ambitions to be a pastor. But sometimes paths change
and his journey began at age 12 when he first began playing drums, then turned to
the guitar. After briefly attending college in New York, Tillman headed to Seattle...

Stacie Collins - 'Sometimes Ya Gotta...'

by Michael Cala

Stacie Collins has been called, "a country fried version of Joan Jett." While the
latter may no doubt figure as an influence, blues harp player Collins's gritty voice,
distinctive phrasing, and relentless energy show her hometown that an ostensible
"country" album written and cut in contemporary Nashville can have cojones. If
you've ever rocked to the Georgia... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001Q8bMZyG3U1rRSxUdf9y-lJOfu5Bfb5pHY4hE4faiic_owUbIch66O61CLDET-5XTcEajni2HVr3GtOqUdRuK1ysRsPekUWQzb3vZXZv00Z4VyS_sQqW-h3kPXy8MxIDzcNvlZYJsQpOS7joyEoqHUmuuyQrJSICCnfD3oCQ6ZjFla6fcCuE_JNZ_pLxUVD9lN8Cg5x1DF0E=]

Review of Caroline Herring's 'Camilla'

by Hyperbolium

As fine as was 2009's Golden Apples of the Sun, Herring's latest release is even
more completely her own. In addition to writing ten of the album's songs, she's
reanimated the eleventh, "Flee as a Bird," from a mid-nineteenth century hymn book.
Her music is given added muscle by producer Erick Jaskowiak and a backing band (including
guitar, pedal...More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001Q8bMZyG3U1pk1N83fwQBTo3ZdRzK8tlOaTJfg0g8ivik0-P5_wtFNS2m5Mm4eMHmGaIocHZI92l4R0WTRUye7erRXETN0pFXAfSll1JaXMrJ0X3a_zajTwOXTuzmJfAGx65vEUyWC4MRfEEvURTk7QV_ETC4kk3a2lohRBx6DYZfwCbVRlFwTf5lM3AZS0xVdxXJnd1k9PKNXDt0VKUPjC41RR_8STU6]

Hearth Music's 10 Albums We Definitely Should Have Blogged About in 2012

by Hearth Music

After the popularity of last year's regretful column, we're bringing back our list
of shame from 2012. Each week we receive new music lovingly packaged, often by the
artists themselves, and each week we fail to write about most of it and feel very
bad about that. It's just a question of... Whitehorse - 'The Fate of the World Depends

on This Kiss'

by Kim Ruehl

If you've been hanging around No Depression for a while, you've probably read a
word or two about the Canadian duo Whitehorse. Comprised of husband-and-wife team
Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland, the duo is the result of years of collaboration
in the background of each other's records. Finally, in 2011, they decided to make
a go of it, leaving their solo efforts aside in the interest of developing a sound
built as heavily on Doucet's remarkable guitar skills as the pair's haunting vocal
chemistry. Then there's the songwriting, which is equal parts her...More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001Q8bMZyG3U1oavcod8D4OU5zeW049wgfC9WXlZ1KsCeBwaoM6oJn5MEFyvhES73yYescPt5OlphdzyBv4qsE6wWeA4BnYtZrW-wBqVk6jxPIMk6o1PVuSA0WnJPaKHm1thqCLB0e3rBqqtgJUv92E6hshwZnTH_RDu0lTI7MukHFb2HNJTqyQ63vLRt9MCwhsFkHJLTWh5qVwnH-uAZ3J9Y_pY_RntPXi876GQOfR5ys=]

Joan Baez - There's always something mysterious about a song

by Linda Ray

Joan Baez's clear soprano served as a clarion in the 1960s wars on injustice. Her
music provided inspiration, succor and validation to the legions battling racial
and gender inequity, not to mention the seemingly endless carnage in Southeast
Asia. A heady period both personally and professionally, it was the equivalent of
landing on the moon. By comparison, the balance of her career seemed lost for a
hill worthy of the taking. Baez's influence continues to be formidable on behalf
of issues that inspire her considerable passion, but she... Pictures at an exhibition

In the fall, backstage at the Ryman doing my duty for the Americana Music Association's

into an old friend, which is the whole point of going to the thing anyhow. He looked
at the t-shirt I was wearing, black because I was working backstage, and at the
