Notes from ND

A common source of confusion in the Americana world stems from the fact that the
style shares its name (at least in part) with a country. There are, however, plenty
of artists outside the US making great music which is just as compelling and American-rootsy
as if it had come straight out of the lower Appalachians or the Mississippi Delta.
If you're interested in learning about Americana artists from around the globe (or
sharing the names of some you already know and love), check out this forum [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001CYh3h_h6oJdVvHbpyLg-cb0kiFYLoIDGsRjjg0Xl2Iy_k-TMd6xlklT6ryKwR8CZJGQAfV12bsLifZdstl_jQyIdx1mYGRVPJn4JPTajNGYYxLMryDVzpuAAqaumOY2c16q0qGK1mWKWaduzVDrhdlhFm5l-qURltnuyL-eyMUeOOy6fFET6dw==]

Interview: Alynda Lee Segara (Hurray for the Riff Raff)

by Chris Mateer

One of my favorite discoveries of last year was Hurray For The Riff Raff's Look
Out Mama. Singer-songwriter Alynda Lee Segarra, who is originally from the Bronx,
NY, left her home at 17 and traveled all over the country, ultimately settling in
the vibrant musical community of New Orleans. As Hurray For The Riff Raff, Alynda
has previously released 2008's It Don't Mean I Don't Love You, 2010's Young Blood
Blues. She then began playing live with The Tumbleweeds and released last year's
superb Look Out Mama. (I feel compelled to mention that HFTRR offered an amazing

Unsung heroes of Americana music: The return of the Sweethearts of the Rodeo

by Terry Roland

During the 60's Southern California's Manhattan Beach was not known for its country
music. But, along with the surf culture that formed in earnest in the 50's, music
was as constant a pre-occupation as baseball or football was to the youth of other
towns. Early in the 60's surf bands would compete in what was termed Battle of the
Bands. Dick Dale... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001CYh3h_h6oJcPDmB-ZjuC9yzlnOZO8B54YuUI-6EASbMwKpEruUKRRa71QjY1IQRnmlTS3nkOFDpg3QEQYCeoYSxQFNW7qw13yD5OE9fMepjkpzo-jtTU5kP20nRnJrCyEuuhkj9VWH40jVaSW7o55xv6k3kJkuE8Pd9Qe8NYZtze6y_8DgDYEMkb038DNM0IWQIZEZqfpTSkt-DZhNIDjIeNmnXC_Ct_iFGEDXo-uwc=]

Oh, joy! The glorious return of Kelly Willis

by Fred Arnold

At long last, after more than 5 years, we have a new album featuring the sensational
vocals of Kelly Willis, one of THE great female country singers. A shame that she
has always been something of a maverick, otherwise she would be selling millions
of copies of her albums. And here, at last, is a long rumoured duet album with
her husband of... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001CYh3h_h6oJc6cV7lkAdBsuxGlkCZOMi4gAdleDoxujuMd6FnjrIHmKcxR4RkE7nRpl0gOG_RsUJGBTyjktvQq2LzTIKCi6wXQEic8wWdQ3IPD7gfzZYZINupBTua-FH39MuTGbbXBsdTjvcyv6XVpMCx_vh4xV_O9v9iamsupWF6ckcsHk1ZlKk3esspMbjYh4-HmZu0MYE=]

Late to the party?: New Year's Eve with the Lumineers

by Michael Bialas

The invitations were sent out months ago. Did you RSVP? While a Denver bash to celebrate
a phenomenal, breakout year was thrown by a most promising host, some of us waited
until the final day of 2012 to get the party started. In the year of the Lumineers,
did we miss anything? With a Saturday Night Live appearance (January 19) and the

Whitehorse - 'The Fate of the World Depends

on This Kiss'

by Kim Ruehl

If you've been hanging around No Depression for a while, you've probably read a
word or two about the Canadian duo Whitehorse. Comprised of husband-and-wife team
Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland, the duo is the result of years of collaboration
in the background of each other's records. Finally, in 2011, they decided to make
a go of it, leaving their solo efforts aside in the interest of developing a sound
built as heavily on Doucet's remarkable guitar skills as the pair's haunting vocal
chemistry. Then there's the songwriting, which is...More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001CYh3h_h6oJdfbE58uXsRsdbPCG4XgJRkScF93FnllDvGJqQvK3AEZB94Va-QlChISP2H3G1GkOKNsN4qn-HFeFEUI1-EwZPX6xiH-kNyzPKLGn9oN6WKtpwh2b54leiZD0rstY-IRdu_nbuD2MLZPKHXpQFpZatvq6--1Ro6FI4dQs3nTwIzr_o2zOw0hfw7fnuvczfvtlA26OaZpLnFVoTHBk8OTp84LXaG4pn8IP8=]

Billy Bragg - Waiting for the small steps forward

by Roy Kasten

The year must have been 1991, the Gulf War was on, and Billy Bragg was giving a
concert at Washington University in St. Louis. I was studying English literature
but spent most of my time on a campus campaign against the war. It's a lifetime
away. I do remember setting up tables outside Graham Chapel, distributing leaflets
and talking to students as they filed in for the show. Bragg stopped by the... More

The Miners -

Dig, tunnel, scoop, unearth, reveal, lay bare, bring to light

From time to time people send me links to their music, and I always take the time
to give it a listen and see where it might take me. Some folks have suggested I
might be wasting my time writing and sharing music that is local rather than international,
home grown rather than corporate. I reply the same way every time and it goes like
this: Once upon a time I toiled... Inside the Songs: Jenny Anne Mannan's Eastern Washington Roots

by Hearth Music

I first heard about fiddler and songwriter Jenny Anne Mannan from my friend Kevin
Brown, an excellent bluegrass roots songwriter (and festival producer) who knows
much about roots music in Eastern Washington (Jenny Anne lives in Spokane, WA).
Having just ventured to Twisp last year for the first time, there's about half
of my state that I know very little about. But there's long been a history of excellent
fiddlers in Eastern Washington, with one of the most prominent being ...
