Notes from ND

We frequently hear from brand new Americana/roots/folk/alt/indie/country/ rock fans
who have been turned on to someone like Townes Van Zandt (more on him below) and
are looking for more of the same, to rock their world. This week, we have a new
member on the site who has found his way to Buddy Miller. If you recall from the
print days, ND named Miller Artist of the Decade on the cover of our final print
issue; so, we're guessing some loyal folks in the community are pretty familiar
with his work. Help a newcomer out and recommend your favorite Buddy Miller-touched
recordings in the forum [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001hGx4NZjUxfrkxjw5pcXHR44WMBqqM_0p0OUsC34LXxZXMFYckVzP8126dDWKznTTdXbPoE3ltr1pgWp4dBNVMCZqnoqBowydu_lnCDCWpY2Pu6TAZ3d0ajLpSRclyIhYCkUlT7pVGPRWZc1iJnJjiob46Iv1sDOBfIz7rAQhYZWSKgYJqux-YlbYCs59KgeVrq7Y5bDbZVA=],

Townes Van Zandt: A tribute

by Kevin Norton

There is a story that once during a concert of his Bob Dylan introduced a song by
Townes Van Zandt as being written by "the greatest song writer in the world." Given
Dylans' aversion to such hyperbolic outbursts it probably never happened, but there
is a certain surreal pleasure in entertaining the idea that it might have. The irony
of it is inescapable. The idea of the musician who has been saddled with that title
for most of his working life bestowing it on another musician, especially one as
shy and humble as Townes, seems both absurd and wryly amusing. But Dylan is too
much of a gentleman to have actually... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001hGx4NZjUxfpE0cK_3G_K0cUga2EqCpNBZ1OitzNSY4EP7Nf1-yaKd5FNrG7Q4ltrFH-h_kVp4LaaWGObwXVvAxdx5hbBtNoXuXgUiSuWMIXU_isoPC3r9QToDhoenLCMNkgx5_uwY0RJXtxu25JSMOc1bLqwXFCYNPJg43u3QEi1xY83SaRfzw==]

Review of Samantha Fish - 'Runaway'

by Michael Cala

When he wrote, "You've Got To Suffer If You Want To Sing The Blues," bluesman David
Bromberg wryly addressed the ostensible need for long (and preferably sad) life
experience to play blues. However, if you're 22 years old, live in the Midwest,
and have reviewers claim you "paid your dues" after a mere two decades of life,
can you really sing the blues...More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001hGx4NZjUxfrwYDzVLGPCQFNy-44OqjIxWaAe0AZmp2xAloWZ053jAdpJIBXnuuJ1remXHJUxaVn1bd5yLRUH1j3lTXf4kI_Tj0pewpY32nodoqOYRILDXGfLekAkp__7tB--XUT59prm8slSvGHZmK3xKNceueekklN6T8CGXWVwDZDpcjvT_6G5ZSWwNkey]

Discovering Hannah Georgas

Just when I start thinking some forms of social media are there only for people
to show off their egos and the sandwiches they had for lunch, someone I follow tweets

David McPherson

One of my New Year's resolutions is to write about music more. For me, music is
the elixir of life. Discovering a new artist, flipping through the vinyl crates
at one of the few remaining record stores in my hometown, and especially hearing
musicians play live -- there are few things that give me as much joy as the rush
that music provides. While 2013 is only... Exclusive ND First Spin:

John Driskell Hopkins & Balsam Range - 'Daylight'

by Devon Leger, Hearth Music

It's not hard to figure out what's great about the new John Driskell Hopkins album:
the combination of tough-as-nails roots country with hard-picking bluegrass is simply
irresistible! Hopkins is best known as the bassist in the Zac Brown Band, but he'd
been toiling away for years as a singer-songwriter in Atlanta, GA before founding
the band with Brown. Which makes it all the more surprising that this is his first
album under his own name with his own songs. It must have been tempting to release
his first solo album as, well, a solo artist, but by bringing on North Carolina
bluegrass pickers Balsam Range to be his band, he's taken his...More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001hGx4NZjUxfohqdg7UmipQHb7teHTJkMmHKsOVJgGXaE5ahKOWMevFKjBE-jU3n7uU9AacFo7e0pxVnRcSCp7_wG7LPdzcMn_V72jFY9TA9N6oGhmBWHKZPjk4tMhdBdSRIqWt2sDVRsiusoBZxiTkR0-JEmqeygZtTpaP8nX43y9x5LB3zXNW8V6U2DkYwv0rbsYVcl1I3o=]

Connie Smith - Too cool to be forgotten

by Roy Kasten

Fan Fair '98: A very pregnant Faith Hill is closing her set with her vapid re-make
of Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart". As she mechanically urges the crowd to get
up and boogie, Hill sings the song's chorus - an expression of total emotional surrender
- as if all she can be bothered to share is a little piece of her heart. Not the
least bit engaged with her audience or material, Hill soon has fairgoers making
it for the hot dog line. As Hill's new labelmate, Grand Ole Opry star Connie Smith,
takes the stage, the contrast could hardly be more telling. Standing in one spot...

Review of Amelia Curran - 'Spectators'

by Alan Harrison

I really enjoyed Amelia Curran's previous (Award winning no less) album 'Hunter
Hunter' so was thrilled to receive 'Spectators' just before Christmas. The first
thing that struck me this time was the deepness of the songs. Nothing sounds 'literal',
which leaves the listener to determine the storyline of several songs. Although
Amelia Curran sounds nothing like... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001hGx4NZjUxfpN9oqe7fl-jKYPweVH1plGXvAbGBsK6iK9oGkVYPls5ahMo8Kdyf3xrNbsMCCOLyjGtKqG7KjOwpgi-WT82td9eLLBg9AkhllyeNh062hLeEjHjVDOlrI593WjDdFeiCl_gsaRhS-tweAXSDuFzibWRwr9r8dbIrMkW0cFGRo_Cw==]
