Notes from ND
With the autumnal equinox now behind us, we can now officially say summer is over.
But, even as American music festivals dwindle heading into the cooler months, folks
Down Under are probably counting the days until their summer festival season begins.
It's a great time to take stock of all the incredible music events which have happened,
and those which are gearing up. So, let's have it. What's the best music festival
or event in your part of the world? The Holy Grail of Cosmic American Music
by
Holly George-Warren
Around the corner from Nashville's Ryman Auditorium, the Mother Church of Country
Music, a bunch of lucky Americanafest goers found ourselves in the presence of the
holy grail of Cosmic American Music, which, on September 14, transformed the Hard
Rock Café on Broadway into our own little church. A long-forgotten journal filled
with handwritten notes, lyrics, drawings, and set lists had once been held in the
hands of Gram Parsons. Turning the pages (while wearing white "archivist" gloves)
became a near-spiritual experience for Shilah Morrow, Queen Bee of Sin City Social
Club, and me a longtime fan and chronicler of Gram's....More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001y4r4vX-FMiSPqJsEAnn2ng3EhC_45qsoARAn8So63gmiC-RD4--e3yEnukYizgupSHQaDc-PJGcwKEsyNQVoBjKrIQrXbGjlllrVqfRM8Gd2IMhlaHfdUnF1NfLptqOx6qzZfjPSSjOhe7TpZllrHZrlqimt5nH_iIbV0t1JS91_xs5q0wQSUlo44VwTjxv8a3eC_UzpaYE=]

Flat-Out Country: A new interview with Jim Byrnes
by
Doug Heselgrave
"I've thought about this a lot, and for instance, I think you could take a Percy
Sledge tune - any one of them - remove the organ and put in a steel guitar and
it'd be flat out country!" Jim Byrnes belongs to a vanishing profession. Storytellers
and entertainers have warmed hearts and hearths since the beginning of time and
in today's uncertain world we need them more than ever. But target marketing, satellite
and Internet radio have marginalized and categorized our every whim and desire...More

Hearth Music visits with O'Brien Party of 7
by Hearth Music
We're backstage at the Voice Works festival in the bucolic seaside town of Port
Townsend, Washington, and I'm about to start an unexpectedly ambitious project:
interviewing five members of O'Brien Party of 7. What seems like a simple interview
quickly spins into a rowdy dinner-table conversation, as each member of this extended
family band spins... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001y4r4vX-FMiTRZEYYqXW0FFJV-cHpuvMvK8EdPprrekI2mOwKW4KiHnVmoru81bkX7Mp4_rBjf0MXoiTJPVyeUGbrZTD7719MkqcKS1k_T3yBct3Dnfqh8bj98lQUQf6kP0kR5EBVjjcbfQ5p5x4rECUqN1yG4PC0EBsq5oZNVAG1qC9tb838pD_n0hs3sdD10dIsQDFrgbA=]

Review: Malcolm Holcombe - 'Down the River'
by Paul K
Slowly but surely North Carolina bred singer and songwriter Malcolm Holcombe has
carved a reputation over the years as a fine purveyor of rootsy country blues with
his albums and live shows almost universally praised. Despite this he remains a
bit of a hidden gem, known only to the cognoscenti but there's a chance this might
change with the release...More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001y4r4vX-FMiRO3e1sHCAtYBcO0bHH3bEVy8oc2Irxn9LA5zuxhVRLYVKYWKq89bKzvmM60mA6PUemHaK94jJf4KS3v75hfNwLse44dqqcNVssWD-_JsT-2ErCocoPDi6rSA7Rd6Zh0Pd7GK0kbGBMjbQDDCIwJH1pP6LSknOMmqW9yNGbGVIQLCQ7y-cZv_9Ivnuh69g7u6Y=]

Cory Branan - Live and direct
by Kyle McCraw
I was fortunate enough to catch a show Cory Branan at White Water Tavern in Little
Rock, AR not too long after the release of his current record, "Mutt" (It's his
first on Bloodshot Records.). Like, "Mutt," the show was full of great moments
but a little difficult to sum up. Branan is just not an easy guy to categorize.
If you came to show after hearing just the opening track... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001y4r4vX-FMiROE7XJNWFD_AhbyGqhBtWgoFSMluQvVnAHrdbcR9Ncg9eVfdvM5VQLIfqDn5vqQHXfoxdLbWGJKQ4nCkKPjC_yg_6YQzDt0fP78iTT5mxjUYyxzZ385oCnRa6qpgEVFO5udFDoEU1NH03apiqLLA5LxD-jcO0IuxdgJGUWbr-_5Q==]

'Lowe Country - The Songs of Nick Lowe'
by Kim Ruehl
Over the course of his entire career - whether with bands like Brinsley Schwarz
and Rockpile, collaborating with John Hiatt, Elvis Costello, and Ry Cooder, or pursuing
his own solo projects - Nick Lowe has proven to be one of the most versatile and
influential artists to have touched the craft of songwriting. His music has run
the gamut from country to rock and back again, but the influence he's made on...

Doyle Lawson -
Quicksilver's message in service
by Paul Birch
Doyle Lawson is an interviewer's dream. Good-humored and thoughtful as he fields
questions countless previous interviewers have probably thrown his way, he also
possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of bluegrass history and a remarkable mind
for detail. The 55-year-old bandleader, arranger, singer, mandolinist/multi-instrumentalist,
booking agent and record producer remains very much a student of bluegrass music,
one who approaches all his roles... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001y4r4vX-FMiSDzMx6QeVbTtgkniUHjmIA-J9Qz-eTkHwiTsBcvMVOhCBGPP6zOROcPEwlKbWGz53hN6S0HVc1umeHaO4Y7jxLERiTnIm8PRksbGGUQnQrk55dlM5Qk9bN1me3ZHxhFXDfawqYNisw-k6q84d1jkCBdjFMsyTkg7NQnqvPwZVSAbAiWQHVH7Tt]

Why Randy Newman will always be relevant
by Alex Hatch
I think the first time I listened to Randy Newman I was in my early teens. After
listening to a track or two, my Dad sat me down and had what I like to call the
"satire talk." "The things that this man says in his songs, he doesn't necessarily
mean," my Dad explained. "Most of the time, he means the opposite." To me, this
conversation was simply pointing out the obvious...More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001y4r4vX-FMiRzZvxbUukxv2BSQB7NmToPwtmHP6-VL_MThOgTjKBjX9Gz_rJKfyFvLGhWJVnRoHe3qmgh98AsndhQmd1zFw0EVi1GtObXVHi07ix1VKLGOPahv-nmXZObO9MDGWhOmpbhxPBJ4pGaN9qO_CLpCGmx1TXewb_ZrcFbMBjTIOIPPZJ4j9feeW-Jw0GqqoiXksg=]
