Notes from ND
With a major election now about a month and a half away, a lot of people's minds
are turning to politics, trying to make sense of the news and deciding who to vote
for (if they haven't already). It makes sense then that some blogs and discussions
have started on the site about topical and protest music (see the piece about freedom
songs below). But what do you think about the mix of music and politics? When you
know an artist's socio-political interests, does it impact the way you feel about
their music? Chime in on that in the forum [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001-9unR1oO-shCNI0Tfqh2Ti6Lom2G_0MUyP5UhDKgL9pZP_hiTW3iieNLiqLYSr1tQGEnD7NYhN-6q12v9x2tIVFFyRrWz8ErDV4Av7i1H2HlgszCA1fkrdpaMdqEIGvHj6f6vC9k0wtoEkQCL-i21iIEkYMaHYLVywzuXZkJzCGWUrdDLAUeeRF2UMzccA5f4fmybrUReyW9NcXGB3LbADQtMiagpFbqlqBR3D__8FE=].

Ben Sollee live in Los Angeles
by Kim Ruehl
Los Angeles is a rather strange place. You knew this already, of course. Whether
you've lived there before or have only just visited on a pilgrimage to discover
Hollywood, or even if you've only heard tell of it through blogs and television
shows and the movies. It's a weird town. Nothing is as it appears. I've worked
in the music industry long enough to have forgotten how it feels to not know the
glamour as anything other than facade. But where magic still gets conjured on stages,
flying over heads of strangers on banjo wings, there's no mistaking the cracked
earth... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001-9unR1oO-shpFaX3Co4VFmt2Rasvl9mBF7gc8U3I3BmFOqDqZD7jSMkD8vxKQeBg4W1OHFOad2fuHmSunXqvv7uRlJL7FkIs29FBlpA7Dy-sXy3MSW9nFf_djIgCrHqxZnbhj8e9qJLM09qodYPInYFBiy-WDcvl7meNGbZkZSw1sxbw7pOrOGTtty7As0s2VtLZGdqcs9ZIbOn4WyAv897VokPPGrK2I_w7g78f628=]

City Dwelling Nature Seekers channel the Band,
bring the sax back
by the Girl from Boca Chica
Pittsburgh might be the only large city where you have to brake for wild turkeys.
I once saw one at an actual crosswalk and it made my day. It's also a city full
of green hillsides, acres of parks and an actual herd of deer that live in a walled
cemetery in the middle of the city (for real). So it should be no surprise that
a band called City Dwelling Nature Seekers hails... Cahalen Morrison & Eli West - 'Our Lady of the Tall Trees'
There's a danger one risks, when deciding to pursue traditional-style music. You
can spend so much time digging into the roots that you lose grip on your own solid
ground. We see this all the time from folks who follow the trends into the traditions.
But, what's refreshing and rare is the opportunity to hear artists whose roots are
so firmly planted, they seem to simply be channeling something beyond themselves.
There's an effortless simplicity to the correlation... Anais Mitchell - Balthazar, Clea and me
by Russell Hall
The first thing that grabs you about Anais Mitchell is her voice. Girlishly sprite
and brimming with innocence, her singing brings to mind the hippie-throwback charm
of Victoria Williams, though she says people more commonly note a resemblance to
'80s pop star Cyndi Lauper. "I never thought of my voice as quirky or unique,"
Mitchell says, "but when my last record, Hymns Of The Exiled, came out, it seemed
some people had to get past something to start to like my voice. That was a surprise"...
