Notes from ND
Trying to make a living in the arts has always been a difficult proposition. But,
with a saturated market of independent musicians, it's become even more difficult
to for many artists to do well with record sales and touring income. Of course,
the saturated market has also made it easier to spot the folks who are more concerned
about making a buck than making any artistic statement or music with merit. To that
end, a new forum discussion has popped up about the folks who maybe aren't making
a killing, but are still well worth attention from audiences. Who have you stumbled
onto lately that you would like to see make a living from their work? Chime in on
the forum [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001fjqq674iS-mXJ4MdkJU8NqtD5r6Y4zBrdrjNLi2xseKh6aX8OO6t88274Smb6nEa7Cvuoi2ZFl35BP6l9lAl_1HYwG5DoC2fP_G5OGGgbCM6OsT6GSc_OCAvwemfwXpAZhEog6jdkspliuK3TVguQAh8oL8_IFrtR30Pnu5IuqrvKkFHZLhg-w==],

Luke Winslow-King - 'The Coming Tide'
by Rick J. Bowen
Luke Winslow King is a man born a century too late. His smooth down home tenor and
seamless acoustic and slide guitar accompaniment to his pre-war blues, ragtime,
southern gospel and Tin Pan Alley sing-alongs are straight out of 1913, not 2013.
Lucky for us, his new album The Coming Tide was impeccably recorded, engineered
and co-produced by Earl Scioneaux III at Piety Street Studios in New Orleans in
a modern digital format instead of a scratchy old 78 rpm record. King is primarily
accompanied by singer washboard-player... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001fjqq674iS-n1x609SWNptxPx68fQ7vB482qTNLpHVgLRkVErrxPuKHrkBilH6Cy4Gjv0-RIMvYMK1G9_5yAYye7gcQLySyNyIxtyTC2hkbrYbyH8xHy2itGmEthF-aKdLx3T3rqqVvhFMwywvj_MTnVuND6-vvbu2fKGxgQx6F_BPxsmK5Sgpym0ZTkj8_opu8bES8AGXF8=]

Patty Griffin's 'American Kid'
by Mando Lines
I met Patty Griffin once. Walked past her on the street in Telluride, then realized
who she was. Turned around without thinking and said, "Hello Ms. Griffin. Looking
forward to your show tomorrow night." She stopped and acknowledged me, but she
seemed a bit confused. I said goodbye, took a few steps, then realized that the
show was the night after that... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001fjqq674iS-kwG3AEgleSehvtBCINcZWNmc7qYCU54cwX4-8eotRQ16Z4oh75XP_h8CNnqVltqPqlHz-K9gdWb4N4X5regmhHzYx2ntiU-ZPHF-kLxhK1KLbZoERXgOdlC1ikw6E1Ytmw6ntm_2VqP11g6ZxJ_h4tFsxh1WUpeZJD2A0nEd4Ydw==]

Hymn for Her - 'Lucy & Wayne's Smokin' Flames'
by Bill Kopp
Rock'n'roll doesn't have a long list of successful male-female duets; at least not
ones that, y'know, rock. Other traditions have done well with the duet format: Porter
Wagoner and Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash, the one-off Frank and
Nancy Sinatra duet, and others. But when it comes to hard-driving rocking, there
just haven't been many... Live review: Fort Frances live in Indianapolis
by Justin Wesley
Chicago trio Fort Frances visited Indianapolis on Saturday night for a celebratory
set on the heels of the release of their excellent, new Harbour EP, freshly out
on Tuesday. New to the band, I'd been truly delighted to have both the five-song
collection and their 2011 debut, The Atlas, burning up my stereo all week long.
However, I was... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001fjqq674iS-llcD36mmK9RV6tGIXc0FiRu5O7_-b87ezrT3RDVAw9WdSem2yBAmbfGGdTMY80SkGMM6Z-n8ZasfOupErPdcgn_J6uEoefvoBfRb9bjTT97dFX91ny9qm4Gx-uWXP2BGknlfcLU9lvjY4M-dtWxlXgQrst-dE84wPTNAgp6pAV4K3su26S4G3O_sPBkdEHP4in57JcWQieMd7ypX780tZI]

Ashleigh Flynn - 'A Million Stars'
by Kim Ruehl
Portland-based singer-songwriter Ashleigh Flynn has been earning her way up the
folk/roots/Americana totem pole for years, playing her heart out in cities around
the country. Like many on the Portland scene, Flynn seems to pull from a bottomless
source of inspiration - including bluegrass, country, and folk, but also indie rock
and other styles - to fashion songs which are as heartfelt as they are both fun
and heartbreaking... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001fjqq674iS-mMYk29WFt3wyOnEvdzEVNO4B6PRszluYBGu7uYbOOEb2nH6MML_cHavGGLWCLSqCKc3koQRNONfew9XWwW7CtKoQRHbU4j1aU3FEfEv5BZSUzzjOyeLHYpZZNTVw0dTSeffxlJplztyyfm0_PRy4WCjnACtulgpbxY6f623EZJTQvVwt52R0i-XE96ReNROgielU6TC1rP3pHaQOVtzIJb]

Going down slow - A remembrance of Ray Charles
by Joe Henry
In 1967 I was 6 years old and my family moved from Charlotte, North Carolina, to
Atlanta, Georgia, leaving behind all kinfolk and everything I knew to be familiar.
In our new house I shared a room with my older brother Dave, and we went to sleep
every night listening to a white bakelite Phillips radio. I had never had a radio
before, and listening to the disembodied voices issuing from the nightstand was
to me like looking at the images of dead World War I soldiers through my grandmother's
stereoscope. (In her collection there were several pictures... The Milk Carton Kids return to the roots of music
by Terry Roland
There are those voices that ring in our memories. Some are singular and scream with
passion that demands to be heard. Elvis, Jim Morrison, and Bruce Springsteen can
be counted among these. Then there are the interchangeable harmony singers whose
voices weave around each other in a way so seamless, the voices carrying each strand
of harmony and melody... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001fjqq674iS-k4wV9XjgNWcRe9xVWaqjMjHCx6mcRw2A9G48Q9qyJAgXhZQ1DMPuOwHk4F_ooCCno_OYoN-YsQ5mzhXtOni430ESgn8jG9ea2P1o1VHc0B5tdi4fmCFMWdbvlJlaEYsyE4er8WKJeA_w2Sk8ZF2s1fR7iExLVzsFjpQZZjBrc4oi5jVIqjPALKYpDvDM-s1W-LHxyb_ihqxt4ZNVYrZVFk]

Inside the Songs: Iarla Ó Lionáird's Irish Journey
by Hearth Music
Iarla Ó Lionáird has a preternatural ability to change the way we hear traditional
music. Heir to the rich and ancient tradition of Irish sean-nos singing (unaccompanied
ballads in the Irish language), he's turned this insider musical art form (often
performed in pubs with closed eyes and near-trance like energy) into the arena
shows of his former band Afro-Celtic Sound...
