Notes from ND
As you may be aware, here at No Depression, we have more than 23,000 members and
more joining all the time. Folks are blogging and sharing information daily, which
can make the job of managing the community a tall order for just Kim and Kyla to
handle. So, we rely on volunteers and a trusty administrative helper to get us
through. While our admin helper takes the summer off, we're looking for a responsible,
reliable person to fill in June-Aug for a small monthly stipend. This person will
welcome new members, edit blogs for style, update Review and Greatest Hits archive
pages, and other duties. If you or anyone you know would like to gain some experience
in web admin over the summer, reply to this email or reach out to us at newsletter@nodepression.com
[mailto:newsletter@nodepression.com] to learn more.
Meanwhile, sure, Mother's Day has passed, but that doesn't mean the time has passed
to think about how wonderful our mothers have been. There are certainly a number
of great Americana songs about mothers, from Merle Haggard's "Mama Tried" and on
down the line. What's your favorite mother of a song? Add it to the forum [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001EJhe98VZThDt6yxCDhzKLE4vMUAd97JmrIdevcq5kjORN2IfNNcpVj89iY2hWpcQ0-R57tNpPyyjsg_9NBx7hPO2utu1GBfptKu1aPNGKok6xdc-t6FmpCl0cUd8PrOg6MfvD0TfQ6SX0f5l5NaoxTx7FZJE9mswIU_6T1GP2xmScfM6rm-gRw==]
or simply keep reading for some highlights from the past week...

An interview with Jim Lauderdale
by Twang Nation
If you're a struggling musician I suggest you take a look at the career of Jim Lauderdale.
Between early setbacks as a Bluegrass banjo player, and being marginalized in Music
Row there were plenty of opportunities to chuck his guitar in the gutter and call
it quits. But he persevered and used his songwriting as a musical dowsing rod to
move him always forward toward unexpected and exciting places. If the Americana
genre didn't already exist it would have to be created for Lauderdale. He's worked
in multiple genres (Bluegrass, country, rock, soul)... Review of Steve Martin & Edie Brickell - 'Love Has Come for You'
by Doug Heselgrave
I have to confess that I've been absolutely side swiped by 'Love Has Come For You.'
I guess that's what happens sometimes when your expectations are low. I also have
to confess that I've never been a fan of Steve Martin's films. I don't know what's
wrong with me, but I just don't find him that funny. On top of that, it's tempting
to write off artists who jump... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001EJhe98VZThDsrCJW9k8VD2R2RnCz6WJUED0xRtOulMiT-KsPOd5_yVm8pZLHqgzcfEJdsH7KONTzmHqYk8txqr-htiD5xDESVBvtMiLPygTCAI4CX9ZiXWzVJVGyO-RCHwbF8UxiE6E-2zmtlM6651L4jB--XIzlQ7CXHu70jb7R3l-gfAn_rPGeHF5WWQpQdkvkODWFhG9gNDzP2ABJbA==]

Rodney Crowell & Emmylou Harris live in Manchester, England
by Julia Coulton
Being one of my very favourite artists I have seen Emmylou Harris perform live many
times now, but her current tour with Rodney Crowell really was a special treat.
They, together with their 5 piece band, played their hearts out in two separate,
long sets; the first a collection of songs from their shared history, and the second
from their new album... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001EJhe98VZThCgvYvhXnkemo3xiGmzm36Lk7T3pI5QEvYjd2v7LhSPonYgUJICGKE6qweStWjSEs9gZe4n4XooYDze4hPVVDcC6bohy7mWxwSHGS4ugd41nwaeRfKuHfBEe_WwxVwAbORFjfiTiCHbUxWdYZz_KKPrk9P76H1-BcFL0wWNRLk4zl_35AZrUyT7n28CnmgWR_u4Nir63Ejzk9sgroT35YcpijplGc8A4Ww=]

Ryan Bingham: From country roads to AmericanaramA
by Michael Bialas
Ryan Bingham might look, act and talk like a cowboy, and maybe that's where his
crazy heart ultimately lies. But there's more to the singer-songwriter's backstory
than the scratchy voice he can raise to eardrum-splitting levels and the hardscrabble
past that's impossible to forget. The 32-year-old musician with a sense of adventure
has a Los...More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001EJhe98VZThBVog3tLGqGoM81v8U-w4sed_qQyxVJpI6AJXSit_oFWi_j1UA_dBc1X6BiBTCzoAwjAgyAcyy9zgia_LSTdwfsN79XbrIzxhwawV0-nsVfkNrhtwcV2FOVbQWEBjiq7QiWZG2-LpYTn7xik__Zl1KZOM4fTQpZBzxOOEHwL4nzeFGmdR-MlIytACgFaJlIJWh05TNf22zGRA==]

Whiskeytown - Falling down, standing up
by Peter Blackstock
You could see it in his eyes. "Hey, hop in the van, let's have a shot," Ryan Adams
beckoned, and who was I to argue with that Peter Pan gleam and Pied Piper smile.
It was Saturday night of the 1996 South by Southwest Music Conference in Austin,
and a handful of A&R reps were milling around the van with North Carolina plates
parked in front of the Split Rail, just after Whiskeytown had delivered an impassioned
40-minute set to a room so packed that even conference badge-holders were being
turned away...More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001EJhe98VZThA1v6-RanJmiFFRetmjNSBGgTOuwFOidB48E6DROlrAwkFV2ubKjBv2NxnFuFkxeCELrysPQPcY1hKBOoKPW6p6W0yXRojrW9yxB_EPR_lUW_ZDKelN1OSXdpNipuMeLr7cv_358UfXGSPeDfFqhiWIkc1LMz7Cqd9wp6bnWTOMMw==]

Review of Tin Cup Serenade - 'Tragic Songs of Hope'
by Bill Kopp
As I've chronicled elsewhere, my awakening to the charms of jazz is a relatively
recent phenomenon. And as I wade into the deep waters of that genre, I find that
certain sub-styles move me more than others. Hard bop, swing, big-band, soul-jazz
and some of the more out-there fusion: those are the styles that speak to me, even
if I don't always... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001EJhe98VZThCSTYMYgLvwgDAgbwNQ2xHhqy5nn_8zImfyT4UFIlx4ta92kXDWxp-NnhxAMG-8jF832q8j1Oo2edZA-nb7upILwjhYTiebLA0mXQg6GXV44TaP4UK9GN2ZtZzLSGot11Ql5qy18KxVMFpSG-AWzvMjZ68WdG9a1T5NDaLBpkkYRxrkOQmy0Gde8IXLhka7KCnSqF_5iYXWKg==]
