Roy Zimmerman - Songs from the left for the right

by Terry Roland

Political comedy in song is a rare thing. While there is an overload of political
satirists, especially among stand-up comedians, it's hard to find talented singer-songwriters
who devote themselves to comedy. Then again, there are many politically driven topical
songwriters out there around the folk-circuit. While they do some funny songs, there
usually is also a serious undertow that eventually takes over. With Roy Zimmerman,
there is that rare artist who is pure comedian and pure singer-songwriter... More

Rooted in the blues - Boo Hanks & Dom Flemons live

by Holley Dey

I asked Boo Hanks to sign the photograph, and then watched as he took up the pen.
Each letter of his name was slowly and carefully formed; the "B" and "H" stand
ramrod straight. There are no flourishes, no vanity swirls. Like the man, his
signature speaks a plain, straightforward language. James Arthur "Boo" Hanks was
born and raised in Virginia... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001vbKsV0JRpRjUwKnU6QcmL6jsdeOHtEKjB9X3oLj3Xqx1T8EqcADleljOr91p9V5wfs1GJYW6pPj_V7RCZWXj9CeuBNu7nWMYAXlTdz2fSemXFO_xZznsteBJYoIpPMymHYSt1Gj24yaoBle4RhI0_vYb-iYZ0WCKiUrwjHkkcc0eCjiUA8tBXOhufFoD_d6hAlLGfsuBWCsLbrPLx_Xs5369aDCEYlGk]

Interview: Sean Rowe on 'The Salesman & the Shark'

by Chris Mateer

Sean Rowe's Magic was one of my favorite records of last year. It was his second
full length (his first was his self-produced 27, now out of print) and it marked
the true arrival of a singularly unique songwriter with a voice that evokes wonder,
mystery, and awe. Not surprisingly, names like Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits often
got name-dropped... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001vbKsV0JRpRiVDnXdTpe5a5xGZtGPLAHNKaw1ZMCO0s_qliv_MKaB26sGyVPilB1jDxhiLNtTDEmhpIoCI2J2yQ5NMaj0_7AaOwKXIEcLrWqVusAz1IDK5HYwPKZBtbaeo6qrzOpQf1nQMK1kMJCn2I0_7X_E7qnSjahuKR251dICNUuCM0mI8oBXw6C_B3d61Hx5cmC6wgTwKFSvraErOZblRmHO9Zgj7ugtRJ7EDvU=]

Megan Reilly - Music and motherhood

by Donald Gibson

"I know when I'm writing something and I just get this feeling that comes over me,"
singer/songwriter Megan Reilly explains. "And that's really spiritual and powerful.
"But it doesn't always come," she says in the next breath, "and that's frustrating."
The Memphis native is no stranger to the vicissitudes of her muse, or to the patience
it requires... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001vbKsV0JRpRh8wAFzjUnyiQ1LA7kHiBLOoVDbeNRfkkt4HzoPaczGmt5bZClOyeaVAFQNhalfz1SEabRXEVLVmUbbZ16Dq8KhVGauYMptxNFYgKcceaRa7aP9wkvvK3cL-PXfX--FJEjsO8isgBdYzAj_WbJ3-pk_9KhB_H3FA_OCMclOgrwl1qdHgdsDfJcudbvIYDAq-Wuini7-5nqt-w==]

My Darling Clementine - 'How Do You Plead?'

(Five Head Entertainment)

by Lee Zimmerman

Dang if those Brits don't have a handle on our homespun traditions. Just look at
how the Stones and Led Zep refurbished the Blues, or how Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe
and Robert Plant took to Country music and molded it to their own designs. Clearly,
those lessons weren't lost on Michael Weston King, a relentless Anglo troubadour
whose earlier efforts have encompassed his efforts at the helm of the Good Sons,
collaborations with Chris Hillman, Ron Sexsmith... Pinetop Perkins - The living blues

by Britt Robson

It is difficult to imagine any man three months shy of his 95th birthday looking
more regally insouciant than Pinetop Perkins does from his backstage perch at an
out-of-the-way roadside joint known as Circle B Recreation in Cedarburg, Wisconsin.
You'd never guess that he'd been out until three in the morning the previous night,
meeting up with his old Chicago friends and playing a birthday party in honor of
the proprietor of Rosa's... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001vbKsV0JRpRhqQRySFir9o1YuKI2YdRZzAT0VtefZdZjtPgjmyheWONcUc7PjQJnw6ySUYdjLu6rhPaBHGs9CLDgBqDdFUt5NVTAL6aEFLf8n6SPwoIzqEn54OfliH9tnf8r2Thqr-5gssqU5t1-xHwErsjj9Ufy3flTL81vgd2k=]

I don't think Steve Earle and Rush have the same audience

by Gillian Turnbull

Recently, I bought my first ever ticket to a Rush concert. I saw the ad in the
paper, screeched about it for a minute, bought a ticket online. Then I jumped around
the house. A lot. My parents were around at the time and in the excitement, my
dad mentioned that my uncle was a fan of Steve Earle, who we had also just discovered
was playing in town soon. When I calmed down a bit, I remembered my dad's comment.
"So, Uncle Ted is a Rush fan?"... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001vbKsV0JRpRjak31cw09UapfoEK4_dwyIrnHt5pOlZboAeuGL1mFq2Ed7axYaSdsNzATvBktmGWFFieTJyQAqlXG8VznUSp2X_BVbXGhQ0xqfZE2sezL5Vbiau2ICTRVpT6MGTT-DwSyo_NrUFY3gWyYtfD3uQrVnmvkmbLxMNqMlEzZ7gfUkG_UumER5Ues4dAxatERL2SrFmwLLOqp55wzbXaSyD9Ns]
