From Kim Ruehl, your Guide to Folk Music
Whether or not you're getting ready to head to Merlefest this week, it's a great opportunity to scan the lineup and revisit some of the greatest players in modern acoustic music. Indeed, this is Merlefest's 25th year and to celebrate they're welcoming some of the finest artists - old and new - back to the stage. If you're not headed to the festival, this could be a good guide to an at-home Merlefest playlist.

Artists to Watch at Merlefest
Merlefest is huge. Spread out across a community college campus in Wilkesboro, NC, the annual festival draws enormous crowds from across the country. This year, celebrating its 25th festival, it's likely to draw folks from around the world. Here's a look at some up-and-coming artists you won't want to miss.

Profile: Doc Watson
Merlefest is basically a huge party thrown by the great and legendary Doc Watson, in honor of his late son Merle who was killed in a tragic tractor accident. Learn more about Doc Watson with this biography and profile.

All About Alison Krauss
To celebrate its 25th year, Merlefest is welcoming back some of the greatest players to have ever graced its stage, including the inimitable Alison Krauss. Seems like as good an excuse as any to get reacquainted with Krauss's music. Check out this brief introduction.

Introduction to Bluegrass Music
Merlefest began as a predominately bluegrass music festival, though it has welcomed artists from far outside that genre through the years. (Last year, the Doobie Brothers were there!) But, it's still a bluegrass picker's paradise. Before you go, be sure to bone up on what constitutes bluegrass music, so you can know what to expect.
