Notes from ND
Music can be a complicated animal. For some songwriters, the source of their creative
energy can sustain them for an entire career of consistent creative progress. For
others, it's a more elusive thing, toward which they spend their lives working and
only manage to nail it once or twice in an entire career. Regardless of how they
get there, the best work is always just as sweet. So, in that light, who is your
favorite artist to have only made one or two really great albums? Chime in on this
discussion [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001LsZ-xx-82gXm_w3cSwlVpLtI6M5wBDcVaeVJ4N7DYK-8XEAeXUrnnIy4p0Axh64WIQTZ-2qwAfPbYCrThg3jI1jEn7OjekT3oPJXW4eism7jvrilyezrWm41hA5ccSVdt7FKSmDP3ldjFLEHFpDmXTCtnzP-GUJIrc5Iu_nU00FNCoE1W4dhD_euAS3BUveRCcAbsLydAGU=].

The ND Community's 50 Favorite Albums of 2012
by No Depression
"[The year which just passed] was a great year for new music." So say critics far
and wide, pretty much every single year as they gather their words to present a
Best Of list yet again. But this year feels different. Twenty-twelve was a really
impressive year in the world of Americana/roots/folk/indie/alt/
country/whatever music. If there were some kind of gauge of this sort of thing,
I might hypothesize that 2012 was one of the best years for "Americana music" since
the term started accruing meaning. There were [quite good] new releases from some
of the most talented, long-lasting path-forging superstars (Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen...

A case for record of the year: John Fullbright's "From the Ground Up"
by Matt Mesa
I don't write on this website very often--I read it all the time, but I don't often
write. Up until now, I've been content to let the professional bloggers inform me
about the comings and goings in the alt-country, Americana, roots-rock world (whatever
that is). It's always fun to read concert reviews, watch a video or two, and perhaps
chime in on a dialog that, like coffee caramel chocolate cheesecake, you just can't
seem to stay away from (e.g., "5 records which changed your life"). But for me,
the most rewarding... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001LsZ-xx-82gUdc1luXxS19QiD9Rk01EJt02Qc5or7UzZD1aRPVwVzyJ0IfDBtn2PlRwBIfokgYwaEtOWhtuqIt4ZD-PN0oBFr5lQcPBPCmFsqq9p7Rc7kasa7xyr0-UNVHaz7rzpKA-qBRTk9XOskInO9PmNB3Y9B_SjEYMNW2GRV0qFbpJIgUvjNeOVZwsSHHmKNU6ZpiNEzOAF1-zF9JL1dRjMvWKC9nditNU76DK0=]

Interview with Birds of Chicago
by Kathy Sands-Boehmer
Birds of Chicago is a musical entity that you'll be hearing more about... there's
no doubt about that. Their self-titled debut CD is catching the attention of music
critics and fans alike. The core of the group consists of J.T. Nero (J.T. and the
Clouds) and Allison Russell (Po' Girl) and their unique sound is captivating. These
two musicians actually began... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001LsZ-xx-82gUc4mSt-DqICl7lLdYXLWnCcVzyYHHuxTrSZXe_0XXzFZI8lTqQA9Xu2rNn_nvcjzKD4GT4Y6vTxU0WPsPloLPE2EEYLetPzf3zg7uYgMXlY0PpCq-rymiJ2a2xl99DVzRKHGvbeHSDfMGY5Y6QYl4tzVwDX3qEbK7AOstKP7wRagYMVBzTIAog]

Book review of 'Steel-Drivin' Man: John Henry - The Untold Story of an American
Legend'
by Michael Cela
Since his death in 1873 at age 26, the musical idea of the indomitable steelworker
John Henry has inspired our imaginations. Labor unions, miners and railroad workers,
especially, have taken him as their Everyman. As such, the man who "whupped" a steam
drill has become synonymous with triumphant human spirit. The results of our fascination...

DVD Review of Ike & Tina 'On the Road 1971-72'
by big boy
From the opening scenes this thing just explodes off the screen. Tina and Ike are
in the back of a limo, with Tina telling Ike she wants to go where she wants to
go and Ike giving her the chilly pimp glare that intimidated many an adversary and
colleagues as well. But Tina just laughs, calls him grumpy and puts her head on
his shoulder. Scandal seekers need not... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001LsZ-xx-82gVbD1Nh_pCyauedeIPbVeMsYhWHCRw4VHxVxi0jCtzFsUCDyFfts-uz6s7ElcVlN4FjxxhX6BXDFNqcKtuOvIGZ0bYnu1eglVh7Dd7uub1how6rGBsFxuHt6Ovtte9bog4eirPLfMOo5k37KIM7FPfwUZXQyT0bUoIPKzNtAa3KPd-SkhNYR6J_2vcMaubU47Y=]

Avett Brothers - Raggedy righteousness
by Rick Cornell
"Screaming my lungs out with nothing to say." So goes the key line of "Please Pardon
Yourself", a song of almost palpable yearning and hope from the Avett Brothers'
new album Mignonette. I'll give them the first part of that lyric: The trio's harmonies
do involve a certain degree of hollering, much more so than your typical band that
leans toward bluegrass or old-time country. But for the Avett Brothers - brothers
Scott and Seth Avett, 27 and 23 respectively, joined by early-30s upright bassist
Bob Crawford... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001LsZ-xx-82gXLhwWyZI-vVKwDgWt-jIHbjPSSD5WhgVQFRggDUb-tzFMdkyUCgLDgOax0ylBufdBlr06YbHSiVxF6O_HtnfcHs9Ln0EpAFWGv2y9za6fnXE9HueD_cM5acpKo8tgTqn_VZghaKvFBadToU7mWLFiaw0Tzrgwi3kI8kurv0eh8xw==]

Bror Gunnar Jansson - Self-titled

I was just complaining today about "limp-wristed" modern interpretations of hard-edged
Southern roots music. This music wasn't made for a bunch of Northerners to dress
