Notes from ND
Our hearts go out to all those affected by Hurricane Sandy in the past week, who
will continue to be affected for many weeks to come. From the devastation in the
Caribbean to the destruction in the Northeastern US, a lot of people are turning
inward right now to focus on the things that really matter day to day, tuning out
politics and other hullabaloo... it's a good time to simplify and cut to the really
important things. (We still urge all Americans to vote, of course.) But, in the
interest of simplifying, maybe now is a good time to revitalize this very simple
forum: Post a video of a song you like [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0010t5cUImVJUJnkBwqGh768z1zJkMJByPcUHi1G8GuYysmG2ba64Ka5PUbP-_U17fxDjKR1NZ7tROkL01FXb-Cs4FzVpjfcyBdxAgJMBoR4BueocLoV1ukuZrXVLhQU47WO_KvgWcAskqf5V_Z9G8Tr4LBeqwgvS-X-EncFXCjWx22TvMu0nsRsg==].
It can be so easy to get caught up in the complexities of genre and musical taste.
But what we all go to ND for is still just a common interest in sharing good music.
So, share something good, then keep reading for some highlights from the past week...

"In memory of Elizabeth Reed"...and Duane Allman
by Kevin Lynch
Duane Allman died 41 years ago today. It reminds me of how long ago I heard something
new rising from the South. I'd bought a new album by a group from Macon, Georgia
simply titled The Allman Brothers Band. I let the needle down into the vinyl grooves
and my speakers burst with roaring blues-rock, vocals dripping with an earthy Southern
growl, polyrhythmic drums (yep, two drummers) and searing double guitar work. The
album cover, a sepia-toned group portrait, exuded steamy old Savannah's "Midnight
in the Garden of Good and Evil" atmosphere. Plus, they had the guts and talent to
open their debut album... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0010t5cUImVJUL5px2wsAOnVonvQln9PZ39bESQFJsVLf4YpMJ-nrqqnKGOf3mOdZYjL_5dq6bUId2aWxkSYhakkJQZYGt7KpDP77x5hNUMTQzD3Tcs_dJbCcAi-Hh9oGO0bqu1qdGXr2S8kF2LNt51UuFwS_EkJ-Xw0iAEqlW8o2jullsOhy60eocdYig7Hhgsld3NaK-Xng4=]

Live review of Emmylou Harris & Daniel Lanois doing 'Wrecking Ball' in Nashville
by Amos Perrine
I first heard Emmylou Harris quite by accident on the radio station WBAI in 1970
while visiting New York for my writing gig in Philadelphia. It was a short set,
perhaps just 30 minutes or so in the studio, but what piqued my interest at first
was that David Bromberg was backing her up (whom I had met at the Philly Folk Fest
the year before). But what hooked... Sam Baker live in London

And so to the final date of the UK tour where the show signage indicated another

On consecutive August nights at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium, Neil Young performed
the entirety of his new Prairie Wind with close to three dozen musicians coming

a brief intermission, he played a second set of songs from his career that fit the
mood. Whether his expansive song introductions were due to the fact that Jonathan
Demme was filming for a forthcoming theatrical and DVD release, or simply because
Young was feeling very comfortable... More [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0010t5cUImVJULDGIBmnddH0U_2cD8UvyDUJdz5Pff4xbuURPa8g4pXw4PysBjtIpg7XNImlCp6AtsxuZODjaGEKAh1UO9Xuz8xT28g7DrYBWQYi4ae-94aETGdLVy0zsIpII-A8M30USTGFQvgIZ2a96HkME3kcg5oVtDW1vhiFXssSFxlsZo2VNAPJXrI8G8HHJzQyELJ9Q0=]

Review of
Jimbo Mathus -
'Blue Light'
by Bill Kopp
Musically, the 1990s were an eclectic time. You had all sorts of strains of music
showing up on the pop cultural landscape. One of the more outré ones (commercially
speaking, at least) was the modern take on Martin Denny and Esquivel-styled space-age
bachelor pad music and/or exotica, most notably in the form of Combustible Edison,
a group named after a cocktail. Another quirky style was embodied in a group....
