From Kim Ruehl, your Guide to Folk Music
Sometimes it's important to remember where you came from before you can decide where you want to go. In the spirit of that sentiment, let's take a little time this week to think about the long, vibrant history of American folk music which has come to inform all the variant styles being played and popularized these days.

Essential American Folksingers
From Pete Seeger to Bob Dylan and far beyond, here's a look at some of the most important folks to have ever touched the craft of American folk music since it started being recorded.

Important Folk Albums
There are constantly so many new releases dropping not only from the folk and Americana world, but the music industry in general. It can be easy to overlook albums which have been out a long time and never entered our radar. Check out these essential folk albums.

Profile: The Carter Family
The Carter Family is widely considered one of the most important early sources of American folk and country music. Not only did they help popularize both forms, but they were a huge influence on artists like Woody Guthrie, Johnny Cash, and Bob Dylan.

Best Songs from the 1960s Folk Revival
Many people think of folk music as something which happened around 1955 and lasted until about 1970. Of course the history of folk music is much more expansive than that, but what happened during the "revival" of the mid-20th Century was indeed something special. Check out this list of some of the best songs from that movement.
